May 11:
Mother's Day and Our Naming Ceremony
We recognize and celebrate all of our mothers, and
embrace the newest members among us with our traditional service for naming
and dedication. While most UU's are uncomfortable with christening or other
ceremonies enlisting infants in a particular faith, we observe a service of
child dedication or naming that recognizes a new person in our religious
community. In our tradition, we have evolved a service recognizing that life
is not a closed circle, but a spiral opening continually to newcomers who join
our families and our community. The ceremony invites the family and the
community to dedicate themselves to the continued nurturance and loving care
of the new arrivals, and provides a formal recognition of their names. We
express our communal concern for the newcomers, and reaffirm our commitment to
helping all the world's children. Presenter: Ben Edwards Service

May 18: The Community Care
Clinic -- Service to Our Community
A panel of volunteers for the Community Care
Clinic, a free medical clinic located in
Watauga County, will present a discussion of their efforts to bring
health care services to the uninsured living in this area. The degree of need
they address weekly appears insatiable, and plans for expansion for the CC
Clinic's level of operation are in progress. What are the best strategies for
meeting this expanding demand? How does the need for this clinic reflect our
nation's concept of the universal right of basic medical care? Come listen
and participate in the discussion.
Service Leader: Glenda Hubbard
Presenters: Stuart Kaplan, Betsy Harris, Shirlee Edwards, Michael Goopta,
Linda Lopez and Terry Taylor, plus Physicians Assistant Marian Peters and
other volunteer medical professionals.
May 25: What Inspires Me?
The language which describes our human responses is
widely diverse, but those moments which are experienced in visceral, emotional
or intellectual revelation can be long lasting, even life-changing. What
causes such a response in you? Is it music, a connection with another person,
satisfying an intellectual traverse? We begin an exploration of spirituality
which in future months will enable our members to speak about their own
personal experiences. Members of BUUF will begin this journey accompanied by
some of their most meaningful song, music and sacred expression.
