SwiftVets,

The story, below, on how the U.S. media is censoring news about Iranian agents and car bombs in Iraq would make Stalin and Goebbels proud.

We have a major, major problem on our hands. As Victor Hanson wrote recently in Fantasyland: "We are in dangerous times, because beyond the normal Democratic/Republican, Left/Right natural give-and- take, there is now a growing and very crazy New, New Left. It has transcended both the old Marxism of the 1930s and the counterculture of the 1960s, and transmogrified into a strange sort of aristocratic, boutique damnation of Main Street, USA." ( http://www.victorhanson.com/Articles/Private%20Papers/Fantasyland.html ).

And now, the story:

Iranians Building Baghdad Carbombs Apparently Not News
http://www.captainsquartersblog.com/mt/archives/001969.php

Yesterday's revelation that US and Iraqi joint patrols had captured two Iranian intelligence officers with explosives and building car bombs sounded to me like important news ( http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,124835,00.html ). Here, after all, is proof that the so-called insurgency is not only supported by outside forces but contains active elements of official outside governmental agencies. As the Bush Doctrine states, any government engaging in terrorism or supporting terrorism against the US has made itself a target in the war on terror -- and this shows that Iran does both.

Big news, right? Not in America, apparently.

The World section at the Los Angeles Times: nothing. ( http://www.latimes.com/tools/more.jsp?section=%2Fnews%2Fnationworld%2Fworld )

The World section at the Boston Globe: nothing. ( http://www.boston.com/news/globe/world/ )

The Minneapolis Star Tribune (AP) reports the story with the headline, "Iran treading lightly in trying to influence Iraq," which contains the following assertion ( http://www.startribune.com/stories/484/4861772.html ):

Monday's announcement of the arrests by the Iraqi Interior Ministry was a rare instance of tying Iranians to a particular attack.

But there was no indication that the two men were Iranian agents, and they might have been working on their own. Iranians enraged that Shiite shrines in Iraq were damaged in fighting between U.S. troops and Iraqi insurgents have volunteered to join the battle against the Americans.

None except their confessions, of course, that they are Iranian intelligence agents. That's probably immaterial to the story if the AP ignores it.

Washington Post World section: nothing. ( http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/world?nav=rss_world )

The New York Times -- the "paper of record" -- International and Middle East sections: nothing.

MSNBC, CBS News World, ABC News World: nothing, nothing, and nothing. ( http://www.msnbc.msn.com/ , http://www.cbsnews.com/sections/world/main202.shtml , http://abcnews.go.com/sections/world/ ).

CNN ( http://www.cnn.com/ ) doesn't carry anything on its front page either, although it has breaking news on Australian killer kangaroos ( http://www.cnn.com/2004/WORLD/asiapcf/07/07/australia.kangaroo.reut/index.html ) and the legal claims of men dining nude ( http://www.cnn.com/2004/LAW/07/06/men.only.restaurant.ap/index.html ).

I guess a foreign government attacking American troops just doesn't qualify as news. Thank God I found out about those killer kangaroos, though.

Great work fortdixlover.

The USA media has betrayed our trust.

Main Entry: trea·son
Pronunciation: 'trE-z&n
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English tresoun, from Old French traison, from Latin tradition-, traditio act of handing over, from tradere to hand over, betray -- more at TRAITOR
1 : the betrayal of a trust : TREACHERY
2 : the offense of attempting by overt acts to overthrow the government of the state to which the offender owes allegiance or to kill or personally injure the sovereign or the sovereign's family

Not if the "staunchest leftie" considered the "government of the state to which the offender owes allegiance" to be the United Nations.

In that case, it would just be "internationalism," right? Rolling Eyes

The following is an extract from a Swift Boat discussion group posting:

Quote:

My friend who is a Lt Col in the Army Reserves spoke with me via telephone
yesterday. He is on a brief R&R trip back in the USA. He updated me on the
situation in Iraq.

They learned from captives that Radio Controlled Race cars and garage door
openers were being used to detonate car bombs. In response, C-130 flights
were made over the city, randomly emitting the same signals that the R/C and
garage door controllers used. The first week this happened, 4 cars blew up,
and about 25 houses suddenly exploded as the bombs dutifully responded
to the signals. The random nature of this countermeasure so terrified the
bomb makers that the incidences have significantly subsided.

Don't ya just love the innovativeness of the modern warrior.

Put yourself in the place of a terrorist group in Falujah:

"Hey Hassim. Put another plas-teek 'splosive pa-keat in zee toy-ya-tah"

"Ho-kay Abdullah. She ess going en der rat now"

........................................... !!KA-BOOM!! ..................................................

"Salaam Allekum SHEET!!" Now howsa em I gonna get me Radio Shack Jeff
Gordon mini-NASCAR to beet tha holy koran outta Sharesh's toy pick 'em up?"

"May Allah bring a thousand weevils to plague that satanic Hercules big bird"

Looks like the WP has, at least, run the story....

Arrest Draws Focus on Iran Role in Iraq

By ALI AKBAR DAREINI
The Associated Press
Monday, July 5, 2004; 7:44 PM

TEHRAN, Iran - The arrest of two Iranians suspected of attempting to carry out a vehicle bombing in Iraq on Monday focused new attention on how Tehran is trying to protect its interests in the country it fought for eight years in a devastating war.

So far, Iran is believed to have used money, not guns, to influence Iraq - particularly by spreading wealth among Shiite political factions - while avoiding a direct confrontation with its longtime rival the United States.

Monday's arrests came on the heels of comments by Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari saying some neighboring countries were financing and training terrorists in Iraq, apparently referring to Iran and Syria.

Washington Post

So much for "so far". I wonder how this revelation will affect Iraqi public opinion.
