I know this might not be too popular around here, but I don't think John Kerry's character 30 years ago is really relevant to what kind of President he would make.

Popular or not, it wouldn't be an issue, and the SBVFT wouldn't exist, had he not made his record, and thereby his character, from 30 years ago the centerpiece of his campaign.

Kerry has never seemed proud of his military record. Not from the day he returned until this years primaries.

And suddenly he wants everyone to focus on those four months.

I agree; it is hard to reconcile John Kerry's statements before Congress in the Winter Soldier hearings with his current "I'm John Kerry, and I'm reporting for duty" position. On the other hand, he did run against ex-Governor William Weld as a "Vietnam war hero". It was what gave him the margin in that Senatorial campaign.

What kind of creeps me out is that Kerry seems to have changed very little since then. The men the SBVT describe in their stories seems to be the same man that is running for President.

34 years later he is still lying to get ahead. He is still lying about who he is.

And 34 years later he is still lying about other men.

As a twenty-plus-year resident of Massachusetts, I can confirm that John Kerry hasn't changed a bit as a politician in all those years.

I honestly find this whole thing heartbreaking. To see a man learn nothing through his entire life is very humbling and unnerving.

With all due respect, I believe that the Swift Boat Veterans For Truth are forcing him to learn some hard lessons now.

I do not blame Kerry for what he did in Vietnam. I can't. I know young men react differently to such times. I am told, and I think history has shown, that war brings out the best and the worst of men.

I am sure many people did things they wish they could take back. Other men will know that when their buddies needed them, and when their character was tested, they did exactly what they would have hoped they would have done.

Every man and woman will have to live with their actions, and hope the cost was not too great for anyone else.. For better or worse.

What kind of creeps me out is that Kerry seems to have changed very little since then. The men the SBVT describe in their stories seems to be the same man that is running for President.

I agree you can grow , but I feel the same way you do. Kerry is still the same as the man he was in Vietnam and the man who lied on Veterans when he came home and is lying on the swiftvets now. This man cannot be trusted with the USA

You got it!

And he's still betraying the soldiers of our country!

We were all young and to varying degrees stupid at one point or another - heaven knows I did my share of "stupid."

But, I'm not making the same mistakes now as I did 30 years ago.

It doesn't sound like you are, either.

Kerry himself made this about his VietNam war record: "Reporting for duty."

Kerry himself thrust himself into the VVAW and lied before the Nation and Congress about the actions of all US Armed Forces personnel in VietNam.

Kerry himself has abandoned the people of Massachusetts in his Senatorial duties in order to acquire the Democratic Presidential Challenger position.

Yes -- it is very much about Kerry's character. Your post proves you have character; Kerry has proven -- by both word and deed then and now -- he has none.

Dude...you are so wrong. If you wish to forgive him...good for you, but I don't think you have a PERSONAL vested interest in the issue of kerry's betrayal.

4more,

I'm with you on that one.

tvaughan, did you know anybody 30 years ago that you thought displayed bad character traits? Are they still of bad character?

You don't have to answer. That's why 30 years ago matters.

Maybe you should re-read this post in its entirety - the first line is not very well placed, but the rest of the post makes it clear that he's on our side.
