For me, just the mere mention of Khmer Rouge soldiers firing on him makes this story completely unbelievable...
As I have stated on this site elsewhere, the Khmer Rouge in 1968 and 1969 numbered less than 2,500. They were mainly a POLITICAL group at this time.
It wasn't until after Nixon began bombing NVA strongholds in Cambodia in March 1969 (Hmm, well after Christmas) AND after Lon Nol's coup over Sihanouk in March 1970 (Hmm, more than a YEAR after Christmas) that the KR began to gain support in numbers by blaming Lon Nol for allowing the bombing to continue and by forging an alliance with Sihanouk, who had popular support amongst the peasantry.
However, it wasn't until 1972 that the KR even began to have their own battalions. Prior to this time, between March 1970 and early 1972 it was the NVA and VC that were doing the KR's fighting for them and even then it was in the HIGHLANDS up north in areas like Siem Reap.
He was unequivocally lying through his teeth when he gave this testimony on the Senate floor in 1986:
"I remember Christmas of 1968 sitting in a gunboat in Cambodia, I remember what it was like to be shot at by Vietnamese and Khmer Rouge and Cambodians, and have the president of the United States tell the American people I was not there; the troops were not in Cambodia. I have the memory which is seared – seared – in me. …"
What bugs me is that in 1986, not one news organization picked up on this KR claim.
Thank goodness for the Internet today.... |
