Sorry if this has been posted, I searched and couldn't find anything.

But I heard that Kerry tried to get a deferment, was refused, so he joined the Naval Reserves, and then his unit was activitated. If that's true, then how is what he did any different than what he's going after Bush for?

There was a mistake by someone in an earlier thread. Naval Reserve Officers during the era were not activated as part of a unit but as individuals. When Kerry joined was after failing to get a deferment to study in France while still free under a college deferment. After College graduation he was called to active duty. There's a fairly accurate timeline on his own website. Just don't trust it starting in November 1969.

It appears he was worried about being drafted while he was completing his Masters Degree in Political Science.

There was typically a several-month delay after being accepted to OCS and actually starting it (in my Air Force case, I had about 4 1/2 months after being accepted until I was able to start). I had a critical skills deferment, so I was worried about being drafted. I candidate Kerry's case, the Navy enlisted him, to keep him "safe" while he finished school and before he could start OCS. I think this was fairly common.

I found a link.

Enlisting into the inactive reserves is common for OCS or ROTC. I enlisted into the inactive reserves when I joined ROTC, came on active duty as a reserve officer and wasn't offered my commission until I was a 1st Lt. I don't think the author understood this.

I was hoping we had caught Kerry in yet another instance of hypociscy.
