I suspect that a lot of TOD was written by wide eyed Research Assistants. Gridley sailors were contacted by two when the book was being put together.

That's the way things are done in academia so people tell me. It would certainly explain some of the worshipful language in the book and blind acceptence of what Kerry told them even when it stretches credibility!

Berkley's credentials as a historian will be in the toilet when this is over.

They are there now. Brinkley never will be taken seriously again. Kerry is like a black hole, sucking in and destroying all those around him. Why some sycophantic historian thought he could defy the law of gravity is beyond me.

PW, I should have acknowledged you probably are right about the use of research assistants. However, Brinkley has embraced what they did and even offered to write an "explanation" for the New Yorker of the Christmas in Cambodia fable (by the way does anyone know if this is still in the works?).

This ruse now being perpetrated on the American people by two pathological liars, (Kerry and Brinkley) is hard to imagine. A massive coverup by Kerry, Brinkley and NBC News in an effort to run the clock out is working. This 3 way covenant, protecting each other with exclusive contracts is working. You would think that Tim Russert would be able to convince Brinkley that a debate with John O`Neill on his Meet The Press Show would be beneficial for the American people so they could judge for themselves which of the two authors are telling the truth about John Kerry`s Vietnam experience.

This is my take on Christmas in Cambodia. Apologize if you seen this already Cool

THERE I WAS - - FIVE MILES INSIDE CAMBODIA... OR WAS IT CLOSE TO CAMBODIA? WELL, AT LEAST IT WAS CHIRSTMAS EVE, RIGHT?

The story of John Kerry's trip inside, over, near or under Cambodia on Christmas Eve of 1968 has caused a stir among the military ranks and veterans. The Kerry Campaign has quietly conceded that Lieutenant junior grade (LTjg) Kerry was not in Cambodia during Christmas 1968. Now the campaign's stance is that LTjg Kerry had conducted several missions in January or February 1969 near the border. According to Kerry's own testimony, he remembers President Nixon saying "...we weren't in Cambodia." We all realize now that President Nixon didn't take office until January 20, 1969. So, did LTjg Kerry's trip into Cambodia happen in late January or February 1969?

A check of the available documentation, the Command History Report for Coastal Division 11 and After-Action reports for January 1969, reveals that Kerry's Swift Boat, PCF-44, conducted only one mission after President Nixon was inaugurated. This mission was nowhere near the Cambodian border. LTjg Kerry was reassigned to command Swift Boat PCF-94 on 30 January, after LTjg Tedd Peck and Gunners Mate, David Alston (now Reverend Alston), were wounded in a fierce firefight on 29 January. Coastal Division 11 would have been the closest unit to operate in waters near Cambodia in early 1969.

John Kerry claims that his mission to Cambodia was a secret mission; therefore no documentation would be available for such a mission. This certainly sounds believable; however Mr. Kerry's After-Action reports posted on his website, include two such secret missions. And yet, any veteran can tell you that there was no such thing as a secret mission without any documentation. A report would have been filed somewhere, even if in the vaults of the Central Intelligence Agency. In addition to documentation, LTjg Kerry didn't have sufficient rank to take his Swift Boat on a mission without authorization by his chain of command. His complete chain of command has said it didn't happen - they should know. Case closed. But, what about a mission close to the Cambodian border with SEALS and a CIA operative in February 1969? Could it be that the trip which was "seared" into John Kerry's memory was a firefight 50 miles from the border on Christmas Eve 1968 and a PSYOPS/PAO mission on 13 February 1969?

The records show that on 12 March 1969, Swift Boats 50 and 94 conducted a Market Time Raiders mission in the Rach Giang Thanh and Kinh Vinh area at approximately 1800 hours local. The After-Action report, supplied by Kerry's campaign website, says that the Swift Boats inserted SEAL Teams and provided support throughout the night until extraction by the Swift Boats. As the SEAL Teams were doing, whatever SEALS do in the jungle, LTjg Kerry's boat was conducting a normal river patrol. Nothing exciting was noted that evening, with the exception of a pile of rice that had been moved to an unknown location. No contact was made with the enemy, and thank God -- no American casualties.

The next day, 13 February, Swift Boats 50 and 94 ventured out again on patrol in search of the enemy along the rivers of Vietnam. Both Swift Boats, accompanied by the unit Commander, Navy SEALS and an armored troop carrier, ATC 131.9, began their mission at 0900 local. They were to engage the enemy. Intelligence reports evaluated a force of Vietcong who had dug in and were awaiting an ambush on the three boats. In anticipation of the ambush, the units unleashed a devastating display of superior firepower. The armored troop carrier returned to base camp to provide transportation for Vietnamese regular troops and bring them to the area of the possible enemy positions. All in all, the units unloaded 50 high-explosive rounds, 1200 rounds of 50-caliber machine gun, 500 rounds of M-60 machine gun, and 850 rounds of 20mm cannon fire along the banks of the river. However, the mission resulted in negative contact with the enemy and no friendly casualties.

Later that same day, Swift Boats 50 and 94 with LT Adavs(Adams?) (Interpreter/Intelligence Officer), and PHC Nelson (Chief, photographer), conducted a PSYOPS mission to Tra Pho village from 1430 to 1630 hours. The boats stopped at the village and talked with the Regional Forces' Commander and the Village Chief. They then proceeded to pass out 125 Tet packages for distribution to the people.

According to the "Official Navy record," LTjg Kerry's boat then conducted its own mission up the river to a point on their military map called, VS 518565, near the Cambodian border. A man carrying rice sacks was observed going inland as a woman approached LTjg Kerry and said the man had just "taxed" her, showing Kerry the receipt.

LTjg Kerry's After-Action report said the area was a known Vietcong extortion station and thus gave chase to the rice-carrying bandit. The suspected Vietcong had crossed the border before he could be captured, according to Kerry's report.

Herein lies the deep suspicion that this was a part of the "Cambodia" story. The closeness of this two hour mission near the Cambodian border and his boat inserting SEAL Teams earlier in the day are too coincidental to dismiss easily. A check of the available documentation on other mission possibilities in the Command History Report and After-Action reports, reveals no other similar missions.

LTjg Kerry certainly spent enough time with the SEALS and the Interpreter/Intelligence officer those two February days near the Cambodian border. They cruised up and down the river, expecting ambush at any moment for hours at a time. It isn't difficult to believe that through these missions, one may have made a friendship and even traded hats on the Swift Boat.

Perhaps, the combination of the firefight he had on Christmas Eve 1968, and the only documented account of his being close to the border, was indeed "seared" into his memory. This could be easily explained as memories of combat colliding. Yet, great care should be taken when influencing foreign policy to sort out memories to avoid suspicion that these two missions were intentionally combined to create a "Cambodia" story.

Douglas Brinkly was snookered. When he gets all the facts and/or truth out of kerry he may have a legal recourse against John Kerry.

Here I was under the impression, based on Brinkley's own statements, that TOD was written based on the notes he took while toiling day after day, sorting through JFK's vast Vietnam archives within his fortress of solitude, while constantly watched by a stern guardian (armed?).

Brinkley has a Genesis Problem. He didn't or wouldn't get the facts from the beginning. When you write a book entitled, " TOUR OF DUTY", you had better interview the man who gave Kerry his first "boot" haircut.
It is clear he didn't want the truth, he wanted access to the Senator to sell books. Period
