Hammers argument is probably the closest to my own sentiment in this matter. I've had my own tussle with politics in the military. Hammer hit it on the head.
I am reminded of a CO I had who was the biggest meddling wimp and super micro manager that anyone could imagine. He couldn't just give an order and let me carry it out as I saw it could be done. He had to tell me exactly how it was to be done and God help me if I used any of my own initiative. I'll tell you, nothing ever got done and I guess that was his idea in the first place. I was continually getting repremanded for not following orders and being insubordinate but at least I got things done.
If the politlicos had let the generals fight the war there would have been no Viet Nam. It would have been stopped in Korea.
Now we have this Kerry carachter who is going to tell us "How" to be soldiers and "How" to fight a war. I hope you've got another hundred years to spend cleaning up the mess because that's just about how long it's going to take if we keep letting the politicos pull our strings Evil or Very Mad

Who is this "Piddle" of the road chap who keeps looking for excuses not to stand up for his own country? I've heard his talk before and it is always the same. "Whine ,wimp, wail, I don't want to fight" Fine, go sit in the woods and leave us alone. You obviously have nothing that you consider worth defending.
Just don't come to me looking for someone to help you out of the sh*t when it all hits the fan. It will soon enough if you don't get your head straight about who's fighting who and why.
I've had six years of eating sand and kicking WOG a** and they still don't quit. If I could do it, I would Nuke Mecca and be done with it.
I've had my fill of seeing my friends and kin folk getting splattered all over Rehov Disengoff and hearing about school kids being butchered in the name of Allah. That is the way "Piddle" of the road would have it if anyone is stupid enough to listen to him Evil or Very Mad

Spot on Digger! Along with the Aussies, you Brits are the best damn allies we Yanks have ever had. We used to be able to count on our Northern brothers too, but they have been getting rather wobbley in recent years.
