Jamah Islamia terrorists exploded a 50 kg car bomb at the gates of the Australian Embassy in Jakarta at 1030 local time today. The blast buckled nearby buildings and blew out windows 500 metres away, leaving a 3 metre crater on the road and absolutely nothing of the car.
Reports say 11 dead (and rising) over 100 injured, several critically.
All of the dead and seriously injured are Indonesians. Some Australians suffered minor injuries.
The embassy building was designed specifically, and recently reinforced, to withstand such a blast and it did, just the front gates and wall were severely damaged.
Australian voters go to the polls in a federal election on October 9 and so such an attack was not entirely unexpected. (Conservative) Prime Minister John Howard's position is to keep our troops in Iraq for the duration while the (Left) opposition party has proclaimed that it will "bring our troops home by Christmas". At this point, the government is way ahead in the polls and, given today's event and more expected, will stay there. As the PM says "Aussies don't cut and run".
