One of the characteristic traits of CPOs is they always show up when you least expect them most. Ask any sailor.

Which reminds me of a story (probably apocryphal, but one never really knows).

Chief says "I don't go ashore on liberty. If I did go ashore, I'd not go into a bar. And if I did go into a bar, I'd not drink. And if I drank, I'd not get so drunk I couldn't walk. And if I couldn't walk, I wouldn't fall down. And if I fell, it wouldn't be in the gutter. However, if I did fall down drunk in a gutter, I'd fall on my right side, so everyone would know I'm a chief!"
