BOSTON (AP) - The John Birch
Society Wednesday denounced
Democratic Senate candidate John
Kerry, a highly decorated Vietnam
War hero, for what it called his
"near-treasonous" activities as an
anti-war leader.
Kerry's conservative Republican
opponent, Ray Shamie, who briefly

attack.
The harsh words marked a major
shift in the Senate campaign, which
began as a referendum on Reaganomics
but has degenerated into a
series of attacks on the two men's
past political associations. The two
are seeking the seat being given up
by Democrat Paul Tsongas.
John F. McManus, national
spokesman for the Birch Society,
told a news conference that his
members resent Kerry's recent
comments that "all decent Americans"
reject the positions of his
group. Kerry made the comment
following newspaper stories last
week on Shamie's onetime membership
in the society.
McManus said Kerry's activities
as a founder and principal spokes*
man for the Vietnam Veterans
Against the War in the early 1970s
undermined the efforts of the U.S.
government to wage war in Vietnam
and indicated that Kerry was
a "Communist sympathizer."
McManus held up yellowed
newspaper stories on Kerry's antiwar
activities, including a frontpage
picture of Kerry in a 1971
issue of the Daily World, a Communist
newspaper He said the stories
dramatized how the activities of
people such as Kerry, actress Jane
Fonda and former U.S. Attorney
General Ramsey Clark harmed the
U.S. position.
"Decent Americans saw through
his near-treasonous activity. In the
absence of any remorse or apology,
they still do," McManus told reporters.

brought him national attention.
Recent statewide polls have
shown Kerry ahead by 6*8 percentcommanded
troops in Vietnam, attended
the event and told reporters
he believes Kerry's activities
"probably caused some of my guys
to die" because they gave aid and
comfort to the enemy.
" "There is no soap that was ever
invented that can wash that blood
off his hands/' said Patton, son of
the famous World War II general.
He said he agrees with many Birch
Society positions but is not a member
of the Belmont, Mass.-based society.
Kerry, the lieutenant governor,
responded with a statement that
said, "This is one of the saddest
days in the history of Massachusetts
politics. The Kerry campaign
is shocked and offended by these
^obscene charges."
Shamie also issued a statement,
"saying he wanted to "condemn this
attack on John Kerry.... We have
both been attacked unfairly.
Enough is enough."
Kerry, 40, vigorously defended
his anti-war activities and emphasized
his leadership in the movement
in winning the Sept. 18 primary.

age points, a surprisingly slim margin
in a state where registered
Democrats outnumber Republicans
3-1.
Shamie, 63, a millionaire businessman
who has never held public
office, won the GOP nomination in
a primary battle with former Attorney
General Elliot Richardson,
a veteran of several top government
posts.
Shamie has repeatedly told reporters
that he attended a single
Birch meeting in-late 1974 and said
he left the group because its fervently
anti-Communisty patriotic
views are too extreme.
But Shamie conceded last week
that he had written a letter to a
group of businessmen and invited
them to his office in November
1975 to hear a talk by McManus on
the country's movement toward
"socialization/*
The personal attacks have
clouded the major differences on
the issues between Kerry and Shamie,
Kerry, a mainstream Massachusetts
Democrat, has been highly
critical of the Reagan administration
during the campaign and has
called for new federal initiatives in
many areas to make up for cuts in
federal spcial programs. Shamie

The only item that I can think of that has not been used in a ad so far is the meeting of VVAW where they debated and then voted on weather to assasinate US Senators. Kerry voted aganst and resigned from the leader ship but did not leave the organization and continued to be a spoksman. In the past Kerry denied that he was at the meeting and that he had resigned before it. He has changed his story becouse FBI documents have been found that show he was there and there are several people who have placed him at the meeting. Now he says that he can not remember being there.
A good case could be made that Kerry should have reported such conduct to the FBI and by not doing so exposes him to some political damage. _________________ 6 Year Navy |
