Kerry's Still Fighting Despite Loss

POSTED: 7:11 pm EST November 16, 2004
UPDATED: 7:39 pm EST November 16, 2004

WASHINGTON -- True to his campaign song "No Surrender" by Bruce Springsteen, former presidential candidate Sen. John Kerry (news - web sites) said although he lost the race, he's not giving up the fight.

In fact, NewsCenter 5's Janet Wu reported, he's not ruling out running again.

For the first time since his concession speech at Boston's Faneuil Hall, Kerry sat down for one-on-one interviews on Capitol Hill Tuesday.

Wu said Kerry's explanation for his loss was simple.

"I think war, fear. It is very hard to unseat a president. No one has ever done it in history during a war," he said.

In his hideaway just steps from the Senate chamber, Kerry denied that he failed to give voters a clear reason to vote for him.

"I think they are dead wrong," he said. "Better jobs, the jobs that are going overseas are pretty clear messages; health care for all Americans is a pretty clear message; energy independence is a pretty clear message; restoring America's respect is pretty clear," he said. "I won more votes in Ohio and in Florida than Bill Clinton (news - web sites) or Al Gore (news - web sites) did when they won both states. We turned out more people; we had an extraordinary ground operation. We just didn't get quite as many as they did. It is very hard when you are preaching fear to people to break through."

"Did you fail to act quickly when attacked by the Swift Boat Veterans?" asked Wu.

"Those were damnable lies. They were part of a Republican smear campaign of fear," he said.

"When you see the post-election map and there's that giant sea of red right smack in the middle of the country, does that tell you that Democrats are out of step with most Americans, as some folks are saying?" asked Wu.

"Not at all. What it tells me is that we have to work on communicating with those folks. A lot of those states are not really Red States, they are purple, in a sense. There is a lot of blue in them. And we won legislatures in a lot of those states," he said.

Kerry made it clear his mission now is to keep a high national profile in the Senate. His top priorities include health care for children, increasing the minimum wage and watching the White House.

"This administration is digging a debt hole that is frightening and I think it is very damaging to long-term prospects for our economy," he said.

Wu said the senator clearly threw the doors wide open to another presidential run.

"You know they haven't finished counting the votes in Ohio yet, and so it is way to early to start talking about another race. But I will tell you this -- I'm far from finished fighting. I'm passionate about these issues. As I say, 50,000 votes and we'd be in a different place with a different conversation.

Saw Kerry last night saying he would be a leader in the Senate because 57 Million people wanted him to tackle certain issues. What they are he didn't say.

The poor guy is too stupid to realize he didn't get 57 Million votes...he probably got about 7 Million. The rest were anti Bush.

Same ol' Kerry. Wink

All I have to say about this is that people, such as the fool skerry, who do not learn from their past are doomed to repeat it. Rolling Eyes

Boy, Kerry wants to run in 08. Howard Dean wants to chair the DNC. Elenor Clift thinks that Dean is a good choice for chair because he's a "centrist". These people don't learn from their mistakes, do they?

Per his latest email, he is still suggesting Ohio was fraudulent, and rather obviously wants to keep his supporters together for an '08 run. Our response needs to be to keep working till the full truth is exposed.

"Dear [name deleted],

I want to thank you personally for what you did in the election -- you rewrote the book on grassroots politics, taking control of campaigns away from big donors. No campaign will ever be the same.

You moved voters, helped hold George Bush accountable, and countered the attacks from big news organizations such as Fox, Sinclair Broadcasting, and conservative talk radio.

And your efforts count now more than ever. Despite the words of cooperation and moderate sounding promises, this administration is planning a right wing assault on values and ideals we hold most deeply. Healthy debate and diverse opinion are being eliminated from the State Department and CIA, and the cabinet is being remade to rubber stamp policies that will undermine Social Security, balloon the deficit, avoid real reforms in health care and education, weaken homeland security, and walk away from critical allies around the world.

Regardless of the outcome of this election, once all the votes are counted -- and they will be counted -- we will continue to challenge this administration. This is not a time for Democrats to retreat and accommodate extremists on critical principles -- it is a time to stand firm.

I will fight for a national standard for federal elections that has both transparency and accountability in our voting system. It's unacceptable in the United States that people still don't have full confidence in the integrity of the voting process.

I ask you to join me in this cause.

And we must fight not only against George Bush's extreme policies -- we must also uphold our own values. This is why on the first day Congress is in session next year, I will introduce a bill to provide every child in America with health insurance. And, with your help, that legislation will be accompanied by the support of hundreds of thousands of Americans.

There are more than eight million uninsured children in our nation.

That's eight million reasons for us to stay together and fight for a new direction. It is a disgrace that in the wealthiest nation on earth, eight million children go without health insurance.

Normally, a member of the Senate will first approach other senators and ask them to co-sponsor a bill before it is introduced -- instead, I am turning to you. Imagine the power of a bill co-sponsored by hundreds of thousands of Americans being presented on the floor of the United States Senate. You can make it happen. Sign our "Every Child Protected" pledge today and forward it to your family, friends, and neighbors:

http://johnkerry.com/EveryChild

This is the beginning of a second term effort to hold the Bush administration accountable and to stand up and fight for our principles and our values. They want you to disappear; they are counting on that. I'm confident you will prove them wrong, and you will rewrite history again.

Here is what I want you to know. I understand the strength, commitment, and passion that are at the core of what we built together -- and I am determined to make our collective energy and organization a force to be reckoned with in the weeks and months ahead.

Let's roll up our sleeves and get back to work for our country.

Thank you,

John Kerry

Do not worry Kerry is through just like Gore. Liberals eat their own when they become damaged goods. He will be left to go on rants that are not sponsored by his party just like Gore.
