NoNaYet,

All ships have a 1st Division, boatswains usually berthed forward and a good place for Marines though we had no 4stripers to rate them.

I was on DDG21 which nicely translated to 'Black Jack' a 'Lover, a Fighter and a TinCan Rider' or 'Two Screw Crew' as no one knew who Cochrane was. In Japan we said 'Goki Buti' and in Tagalog we said 'Epis' which meant cockroach, our over-abundant shipmate.

Not to be nitpicking Wink ... but it's 'GokiBuri'

Very Happy

Someone tell me how to tell a Lt. Col. from a Major when they have subdued insignia.

If they haven't changed anything since I got out, the Major's insignia should be a dull bronz color and the Lt. Colonel's will be solid black.

Tks for the correction. My impression was that the nihon were flattered if you picked up phrases or words however incorrect but were insulted if you really were intent on learning the language...it represented great presumption for a gaigin. As much a torture as the language was for us I got my schadenfraud offering my christian name, Larry. Mangled phonemes and contorted faces always followed. I'd order surume (dried squid) and be told there was no 'sarame' (salami, presumably no gaigin would order cuttle fish). I earned the approbation of the entire restaurant mixing sauce with my rice where rice was savored for its provincial distinctions. ....I could rant forever on my years in and out of Yoko'

The Brits actually had a class of fleet tugs, the 'Insect' class named for bugs. Cockchafer among them...I won't speculate.

Curious how far and wide we've travelled on this thread. Maybe it's the the only active one but I'm happy to chat with all of you and glad you could be here.

Domo ne?
