I wanted to join the VFW (because my dad was a member) when I got out/got back. It wasn't until several years later (roughly when Reagan was in office) that they changed their official rules, and started admitting VietNam veterans.

Similar experience in western PA: Father was one of the organizers of a local chapter, and when I got back, I was "inelligible" (DOUBLE damned: USAF, PCS'd to Thailand. "In-country" only as TDY). so HE quit the post he helped form.

I'm now a member, joined 'cause I considered it something dad would have enjoyed... but it ain't the same. Too bad we're admitted primarily for revenue generation. IMHO: The 'real' guys are "leavin' the table" and the coffers started dwindling, so let in the police action crowd.

There is an AP photo in the Stars and Stripes newspaper today. The picture is of a 2 VFW members who stood with their back to Kerry during his entire speech.

I too forced myself to listen to Kerrys speech (Keep your friends close and your enemys closer) He did state that he was a life member.

Somebody should check up on this. I wouldnt be suprised to find out he became a member on Monday and gave his speech on Thursday.

I watched NBC's coverage. Not a very friendly "room" for him from what I saw: not near the enthusiastic reception GWB got. Seemed the response to ~several~ of his remarks sparked lukewarm, or "polite" applause at best.

Hope my perception is correct.
