It seems like the Navy gave out medals like candy in Vietnam

I think what we have here is a prime example of little Johnnie being caught with his hand in the candy jar.

Kerry put in for his medals. I didn't think that was supposed to happen. I want someone to explain to me HOW you get a Purple Heart without going to a hospital somewhere for treatment. My uncle rec.2 Purple Hearts. Each time he was blown out of the tank he was on. The last time killed him.

Wait 'til you read in 'Unfit for Command' how Kerry got HIS 3rd Purple Heart! I laughed until I cried!

Medal infaltion was also common in the infantry and other combat units.

You're trying to support Hackworth's contention. And I think one can make a distinction between operators scamming the system, like Kerry, and those who didn't even know they'd been recommended. Thurlow is the latter. And was the one Kerry dumped all over with those Kerryism embellishments. Thurlow was offering to return the medal. I hope he doesn't. He can't help it, and had nothing to do with a dork 'spicing up' the report, putting himself in the center of the action like some cartoon character.

I served my YEAR in Vietnam with the 190th AHC at Bien Hoa. I was a combat helicopter pilot. The Army awarded an Air Medal for each 25 hours of combat flying. I flew 1320 hours during my tour...that earned me 35 Air Medals (not all flying was combat).

I was the company Awards and Decorations Officer most of my tour also. I had some officers actually request high ranking medals be entered for them (Silver Stars and higher). However, without witnesses, none were granted and I made it my priority not to give consideration to anyone who put himself in for any medals...PERIOD.

Yes there was infaltion in the awarding of medals. Especially to those who had career or politcal aspirations! The Purple Heart was the one which they wanted the most, and CHARLEY was most willing to comply...but I did not sign even ONE Purple Heart request which was not qalified by the doctors.
