Guess others ARE along on this "solo mission" and I'm glad to hear that -- funny they weren't mentioned until now..... maybe they were only involved in the PA elections and not the rest of the "road trip.
sKerry 's 10+ day trip to various points in the middle east was solo. Seems Biden & company were on an official visit as reps of the US for 3 days to Palestine only for the election.

Joe Biden was one of two senators named Wednesday to head a U.S. delegation of observers for Sunday's Palestinian presidential election.

Tapped by President Bush, Biden, D-Del., and Sen. John Sununu, R-N.H., will visit polling places, meet with senior Palestinian and Israeli officials and assess the election process.

Norm Kurz, Biden's communications director, said 600 international observers - including former President Carter and former French Prime Minister Michel Rocard - were expected to watch voting at polling stations in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. But Biden and Sununu, due to leave aboard a government plane Friday and return Monday, will be Bush's official representatives.

Isn't Joe Biden the Senator who got caught exaggerating his GPA on his resume?

CONTINUING MISADVENTURES of kerry on his solo mission in “representing this country” in lieu of the president to all the leaders of the Middle East:

** Kerry talks to Abbas - 1/10/05 **
US Sen. John Kerry talks to Palestinian President-elect Mahmud Abbas in Ramallah. Former US pres. candidate Kerry congratulated Abbas on his decisive victory in the presidential election, but urged him to act swiftly to end the violence on the ground. (AFP/Jamal Aruri)

** “U.S. Iraq Policy Frustrates Mideast States - Kerry,” Reuters, 1/12/05 **
CAIRO: Middle East countries are frustrated by U.S. policy in Iraq and feel too little is being done to end violence there, U.S. Senator John Kerry said on Wednesday on a visit to the region. .... "All of the countries of the region have a significant stake in the outcome and yet they are frustrated," Kerry said in Cairo, where he met Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. "They are frustrated because they don't feel that the steps necessary to be able to advance the stability of Iraq are really being taken," he said. ..... Kerry, who also met officials in Syria, Jordan, Kuwait, Iraq and Israel, said Washington should do more to build up Iraqi security forces, which are often attacked by rebels fighting U.S.-led forces and the interim Iraqi government. "We could be and we should be doing a very significant amount more military training," he said. U.S. and Iraqi officials should take full advantage of an Egyptian offer to help train Iraqi security forces, he added. Egypt was currently training 146 Iraqi officers, but had offered to train 500 or more, he said. "They offered to do so. It isn't happening & in the insecurity of Iraq I think it's critical to use every possible avenue of creation of stability forces as fast as possible," Kerry said. "I think it's an excellent offer by Egypt. I think it's a welcome offer and I think it should be taken up, fast," he said.

** “Kerry: Arabs frustrated by U.S. policies,” UPI, 1/12/05 **
CAIRO/EGYPT: Former U.S. pres. candidate Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., Weds. said in Egypt that Arab countries are frustrated by U.S. policies in Iraq. Speaking after talks with Egyptian Pres. Hosni Mubarak, Kerry said he noticed during his Middle East tour most countries were unhappy with the poor U.S. efforts to end the violence that has been raging for 21 months in Iraq. "All countries in the region have great interest in ending the violence in Iraq & they actually feel frustrated because they don't see necessary steps taken to achieve security and stability," he said. Kerry also accused the Bush administration of negligence in planning the post-Saddam Hussein phase, which allowed the rise of terrorism in Iraq. He urged Washington to multiply efforts to build strong Iraqi security forces capable of confronting the terrorist attacks being waged by remnants of the ousted Baath regime & Islamic fundamentalists...

** “Ho Chi Minh’s Favorite Son: John Kerry Does Baghdad,” Buzz Patterson, 1/12/05 **
In his first visit to a war zone since 1969, Sen. John Kerry visited troops in Iraq last week. "(Kerry) wants to personally thank our troops for their service, focus on the steps that must be taken to achieve success in Iraq and hear from experts in the region," Kerry spokesperson April Boyd said. (Boston Globe, Jan 4, 2005). There is no truth to the rumor, however, that he rammed his unarmored Humvee into a barricade full of terrorists, shot a young man wearing a loin cloth and came back to the States with another Purple Heart and a trunk full of war hero videos directed by Michael Moore. Call it the Liberal's "Demoralization Tour 2005." ........

** “Kerry to Al Azhar Grand Imam: Washington commited terrible mistakes in Iraq,” arabicnews.com, 1/13/05 **
EGYPT: Egypt's Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif received on Weds. John Kerry, the US Senator & former presidential hopeful. ... During the meeting, Nazif highlighted the legitimate Palestinian rights & the US role in helping resume Palestinian- Israeli peace negotiations. Meantime, Kerry admitted that the US committed terrible mistakes in Iraq. During a meeting on Weds. with grand Imam of Al Azhar Mohamad Sayed Tantawi, Kerry regretted the difficult conditions in Iraq....

** “Kerry to meet with French president,” 1/13/05 **
PARIS -- Sen. John Kerry will meet Friday with French President Jacques Chirac, U.S. & French officials said. The MA Dem. who lost the Nov. election to incumbent President Bush has relatives in France & speaks French. Kerry's stop in Paris was part of a trip to Europe & the Middle East, the U.S. Embassy in Paris said Thursday. Kerry was also to meet with French Foreign Minister Michel Barnier. The senator's office in Washington did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

Thanks Buzz, I will share your message with all of the troops I am acquainted with.

I hope Buzz has the opportunity to go over & speak to the troops. It is positive messages that come from honorable men like Buzz that our troops need to hear. I would love to see a protest that demands Kerry to stay the hell away from our troops.

I'm copying this from ChronWatch due to its interest here. I noticed in the "Blog" section that out of 13 photos, Silky Pony managed a smile only once. I wonder if he's still uncomfortable around military folks. It's a great read and PFC Maib deserves a big thanks for his service.

Hey everyone. I'm not a regular of this [ChronWatch] site, but I Googled my name, and it led me to this topic.

I'm PFC Charles Maib, 1st Cavalry Division Public Affairs, and I took the Kerry pictures. I was the only press there with about 7 or 8 other Soldiers from Mass. (I'm originally from Texas via Minnesota via Kansas). After we sent the press release out the next day, all the news outlets wanted the story. I not only took the pictures, but wrote the captions (cut lines) as well. I'm normally a broadcaster for the Cav.

If anyone still cares, I'd be glad to answer any questions about the meeting. I have more pictures as well.

First off, I've posted the rest of my photos of Kerry, er Silky, visiting with Cav troops on my website.

They are in the BLOG section, although one is in PICTURES.

To answer your questions:

1) I heard no cheering or booing. People smiled, but people usually smile when someone famous enters the room.

2) No troops were forced to be there, that I know of. Everyone seemed to be happy to be at headquarters meeting someone famous.

um.. I can't remember any of the other questions. It's pretty busy here in Iraq, what with the elections coming up and all. There's a rundown of what went on in my BLOG. I'll answer any questions I can!

Thanks CWV. I joined, but hadn't thought to pass that idea to them.

Speaking of the press, here is the official letter from Rep. Jones to Rumsfeld requesting a change with regard to embedded reporters.
What follows is a letter to the editor of my local paper about this.
I've included the email address of the paper if anyone has thoughts they would like to share. I was unable to locate Jones' 12/15 letter that is referenced is the opinion. However the link to his homepage gives you an idea of what Mr. Jones stands for when he goes to Washington.
Very well noted at a protector of veterans and military.

NC Congressman Walter B. Jones, Jr.

Jones Asks Rumsfeld To Restrict Media Coverage Of Combat
Congressman worried that our Marines and soldiers in combat will be distracted by sound bite mentality of television news
Washington, D.C.- In a letter yesterday to Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, Third District Representative Walter B. Jones asked the Secretary to restrict media coverage of military men and women engaged in direct combat. Jones fears that the presence of camera crews may eventually jeopardize the safety of American troops. "I am deeply concerned about the increasing presence of media coverage in combat engagements," Jones said in the letter. "As you know, our troops are forced to make life or death decisions in a split second. Recent events have highlighted the complexity of recording combat situations and placing those recordings in the proper context of the overall battle. Media coverage provides only a brief and often distorted view of what our men and women are facing in combat. It is unfair for our troops to be constantly monitored by cameras and have their every move recorded and subjected to public opinion based on a sound bite or two minute video segment."

In the letter, Jones acknowledged the importance of the media in informing the American public but explained he was concerned that the scrutiny of the camera may lead to the loss of life in the future.

"Mr. Secretary, I am requesting that you restrict media coverage of our military men and women engaged in direct combat," he said. "There must be a balance between the need for media coverage and the difficult and complex missions being carried out by our brave troops. I pray that a Marine or Soldier in the future will not lose their life because they hesitated due to concerns that their action would be recorded by the media, reported out of context, and scrutinized by public opinion before all of the facts are presented."

For additional information or to schedule an interview with Congressman Walter B. Jones please contact Kristen Quigley at (202) 225-3415.

I find particulary interesting that in the blog information that the soldiers tell Kerry flat out that their good works are ignored but death is headline when I read, again what Jones stated:

1/14/05 LETTER: Reporters deserve respect for service
Friday, January 14, 2005

Quote:
The whole training of these front-line troops is directed at quick thinking and unhesitating response to threats to their own and their fellow combatants lives. The reason the Department of Defense embedded reporters with the forces invading Iraq was to tell the story of efficiency and bravery. And these reporters and photographers have told these stories of the valiant successes with singular disregard for their own safety, some 33 of them having paid for their drive to get the story out with their own lives.

What I think will interest you most was this reference:

Quote:
More disturbing to me was Jones' reference to "numerous letters and visits" from veterans who served in Vietnam who "experienced unfair scrutiny" from embedded reporters. As a volunteer veteran of WWII, I took great interest in the Vietnam conflict. There were never any embedded reporters in that war, much less were they "unfairly scrutinizing" our servicemen. It wasn't an embedded reporter who revealed the My Lai Massacre, and it wasn't an embedded reporter/photographer who showed us the picture from Abu Ghraib prison. In a letter to John Lay in 1786, Jefferson said it most eloquently: "Our liberty cannot be guarded but by the freedom of the press, nor that be limited without danger of losing it."

Is this the same guy that stole that 'wrong war, wrong time' thing and used it in his campaign?

If allowed, I could see some really 'nice' signs being presented in the crowd. Like 'MR KERRY, WE WISH TO THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!!' or '87 billion reasons for you to stay safely at home'.

I'd like to join but registration is not immediately intuitive. I tinked around a bit and couldn't find a page on which to register so I gave up. It has a lot of nice Q&A but no instructions on how to register. I presume it's not a closed site, available only for special people, but if so, let me know. I'd still like to join. Others also may be computer challenged. LOL

and Kerry's trip continues ... from the mideast...to Europe

Quote:

Kerry urges repairing US-Europe ties
Visits UK, France after Mideast trip
By Charles M. Sennott, Globe Staff | January 15, 2005

LONDON -- Senator John F. Kerry, concluding a trip to Europe and the Middle East, called yesterday for a broader international coalition to stabilize Iraq, fight terrorism, and breathe new life into the Israeli-Palestinian peace process.

Kerry's two-day visit to Europe followed a two-week, fact-finding trip across the Middle East, where he met with American troops in Iraq and the leaders of Syria, Jordan, and Israel.

On Thursday, the former Democratic presidential candidate met with Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder of Germany, and he held talks yesterday with Prime Minister Tony Blair of Britain about a Middle East peace summit Blair is organizing.

Then it was off to Paris to see President Jacques Chirac of France

~snip
''There's a lot of patching up to do" to heal the deep rift, Kerry said in a phone interview while en route to Paris. ''Now that the election is over, people realize these are very big issues still on the table."

When asked why he had come to Europe, Kerry, a senior member of the Foreign Relations Committee, replied: ''I'm not claiming any mantle, just doing what I've done for 20 years as a senator. I want to fight for the things I talked about in the election. The issues haven't gone away."

~snip
Regarding Iraq, Kerry said: ''The key is not so much the elections, but what happens immediately after the elections. And the steps that are taken by the United States, by Great Britain, and others to broaden the coalition that has evolved, and to greatly accelerate the security, and to reduce the sense of American presence. All three of those have to happen simultaneously."

He also repeated criticisms of the Bush administration's handling of the Iraq war.

''It's been made far more difficult as a result of mistakes that have been made over a long period," he said. ''The de-Ba'athification, the demilitarization, the lack of provisional services: all of those have contributed to our difficulties."

Michael Cox, a specialist in trans-Atlantic relations and a professor at the London School of Economics, said Kerry's focus on the trans-Atlantic relationship throughout the 2004 campaign and his foreign policy background meant that his opinion will continue to resonate in Europe. ''He's a senator, he won millions of American votes, and he did articulate a vision about the relationship between America and Europe," Cox said.

The Bush administration and European governments are now ''trying to repair some very damaged bridges," Cox said. ''But there is still a lot of residual resentment on both sides."

Next month, Bush is scheduled to travel to Europe on what the White House is billing as a diplomatic offensive aimed at mending fences.

So Kerry is doing an European trip in advance of GWB, what does he think he's doing? Laying groundwork for Bush's trip? Influence the European leaders before Bush gets there!? More like undermine Bush

Someone tell Kerry he lost the election....
