The existence of the tape was first reported Wednesday afternoon by Internet columnist Matt Drudge, who said it was obtained last weekend in Pakistan by ABC News. Drudge quoted an unidentified “senior ABC News source” as saying the network was “working 24 hours a day trying to authenticate” it.
U.S. officials told NBC News that the tape included now-standard militant Islamist rhetoric promising widespread destruction inside the United States. The man cannot be identified, the officials said, because his face is covered by a headdress.
The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said ABC gave the CIA a complete copy of the tape Monday. They described analysts’ concern as “low” because it is not clear that the tape was recorded recently and because the man on the tape, who speaks in what appears to be an American accent, mentions no details.
“It’s unclear what this tape is — even whether the person on the tape is an American,” one of the officials said.
Pre-election attack widely speculated
Drudge reported the man on the tape claimed that the attacks would be in retribution for “electing George Bush, who has made war on Islam by destroying the Taliban and making war on al-Qaida.”
The possibility of an al-Qaida attack in the days before next week’s presidential election has been widely speculated on, but U.S. intelligence officials said last week that they had no specific intelligence indicating there was a plot by al-Qaida to launch a strike designed to sway voting.
Drudge, quoting unidentified sources, said the man on the tape called himself “Assam the American” and spoke in an American accent. He reported that the man warned that the attack would “dwarf” the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks in New York and Washington, which killed almost 3,000 people.
“The streets will run with blood” and “America will mourn in silence,” the man said, because it will be unable to count the number of the dead, according to Drudge.
A U.S. official told NBC News that intelligence analysts were speculating that the man could be Adam Pearlman, 25, also known as Adam Gadahn and Abu Suhayb Al-Amriki, one of seven people mentioned by FBI Director Robert Mueller in May as someone the United States would like to locate.

Since Navy Chief revealed the two documents that show that Hanoi tried to influence the Vietnam anti-war movement, I'm beginning to wonder whether other "news" stories have been planted to distract media attention away from Hanoi/Kerry story.
On Monday, the New York Times publishes the story about the missing weapons at Al Qa Qaa, which is debunked the next day. Today, ABC reveals a terrorist threat, but the CIA "cannot verify its authenticity".
Meanwhile, Kerry skates along toward Election Day, about 2-3 points down in the polls, and the Hanoi documents are still under the radar. Hmmm!!!

Video Contains Threat of Major Attack on U.S.
Wednesday, October 27, 2004
WASHINGTON — The CIA is unable to authenticate a videotape that is said to threaten an assault on the United States that would "dwarf" the Sept. 11 (search) attacks.
The tape was handed to the Central Intelligence Agency and National Security Agency by ABC News two days ago, multiple government sources told FOX News.. ABC is said to have received the tape last weekend from a terrorist source in Waziristan, a region in Pakistan near the Afghan border where the Taliban and Al Qaeda (search) are believed to be holed up.
The government set a 3 p.m. EDT interagency deadline to determine the authenticity of the tape. But after the deadline, the CIA said a preliminary technical analysis presented inconclusive results.
"We cannot verify the authenticity of this tape," one official told FOX News.
The speaker in the video is disguised but speaks "alarmingly" fluent English in an American accent, leading some U.S. officials to believe that the voice belongs to Adam Yahiye Gadahn (search). Gadahn, who also goes by the names Adam Pearlman and Abu Suhayb Al-Amriki, is a 25-year-old Southern Californian fingered by the FBI for possible ties to Al Qaeda.
In May, the FBI announced that Gadahn had ties with senior Al Qaeda lieutenant Abu Zubaydah (search) in Pakistan, and that he had attended terrorist training camps in Afghanistan and served as a translator for the terror network.
"Adam Yahiye Gadahn is being sought in connection with possible terrorist threats against the United States," the FBI said in an announcement in May. "Although the FBI has no information indicating this individual is connected to any specific terrorist activities, the FBI would like to locate and question this person. He should be considered armed and dangerous."
"He is known to have performed translations … as part of the services he has provided to Al Qaeda," the FBI said.
Gadahn, whose whereabouts are unknown, is believed to have knowledge of an imminent attack on the United States and is being pursued by federal officials.

They are hiding it because it says that the terrorists want Kerry to win. If they are trying this hard to get Bush knocked off, what other conclusion can you reach?

ABCNEWS obtained the tape from a source in Waziristan, Pakistan over the weekend, sources tells DRUDGE.
"We have been working 24 hours a day trying to authenticate [the tape]," a senior ABCNEWS source said Wednesday morning.
The terrorist's face is concealed by a head dress, and speaks in an American accent, making it difficult to identify the individual, but US intelligence officials believe that man may be Adam Gadhan - aka Adam Pearlman - a southern California native who was highlighted by the FBI in May as an individual most likely to be involved in or have knowledge of the next al Qaeda attacks.
According to the FBI, Gadahn, 25, attended al-Qaida training camps and served as an al-Qaida translator.
The disturbing tape runs an hour -- the man simply identifies himself as 'Assam the American.'
