Even us Army dudes know the difference between a boat and a ship
Lanny Davis was pretty slick tonight and much to my amazement, wasn't called on as much as he should have been. He kept saying every single man on Kerry's boat supports him. Did he miss Steve Gardner? Later, when Sean did mention him, Lanny was quick to say Steve wasn't on Kerry's boat.
Davis also said O'Neill didn't even serve on Swift Boats. Who was it took over Kerry's boat when he left?
The "interview" seemed like a set-up. Their Republican representaive, forgot his name, just sat there with nothing to add. _________________ Clark County Conservative |

My father (was a "90-Day Wonder" who) served his tour on destroyers right after North Korea signed the Armistice. He taught me to sail, and he taught me how to "request permission to come aboard."
So this one I get.

In general, the term "boat" means any craft that can be hoisted aboard another vessel. There are some exceptions in use - such as the term Special Boats: these are 65 and 68 feet in length and cannot be hoisted aboard easily by any ship in the Fleet. Yet they are called "boats" simply because they are not commissioned "ships". That is, they have only lieutenants in command therefore are not considerded "ships of the line". These are the modern successors to the Swift boats - but more heavily armed. AINīT IT GRAND??!!?? Five .50-cals, one 80mm naval mortar, one 60mm mortar, two 20mm MG and each crewmember with an M-16 and the OIC with a rifle. I think that they have now been decommissioned. I believe that they have been replaced by 57-ft boats with 30mm stabilized chain-guns. I am not absolutely sure - but pretty much so. |

Gawd, those photos give me the chilly-willies. Going into a canal so narrow is asking for trouble - " Shoot at me!!!" "Ha! I eat your bullets for breakfast!!!"
Jeez, I would never do that... |

So....
Do you all understand what is meant when we say "served with Kerry"
If you go to www.pcf45.com you'll also find pictures of some of the bases. It'll give you a good idea of how closely the swiftees lived and worked together.
I tell you all one thing from personal experience. I've never in my life been closer to a group of men than I was serving in a boat division...and we all weren't on one ship, we were just in one war. Up close and personal as the pictures show.
Send them with explanations to the media. _________________

Yea Navy they were, but the Cmndr was more interested in schooling me on terms. 8 months later I thanked him for the ride, he laughed and shook my hand. He also thanked me for the ride we gave him on our helo's. I said Sir, helo's are at tourists traps we operate heavy haulers assault aircraft and medium transport for medivac. He said get off my boat Marine. He was a good Officer and at different times throughout the westpac we poked fun at each other. He was the LSO and was promoted to Executive Officer before the float was over. Semper Fi. _________________ Helicopter Marine Attack Squadron 169 which is now HMLA-169. They added Huey's to compliment the Cobra effectiveness. When I served we just had Snakes. |
