I am not trying to say a tour at sea is the same as a tour incountry, however let's not get carried away. The year before Kerry came aboard, GRIDLEY had spent two separate periods on Northern SAR in excess of 30 days each time. Sitting off Haiphong was no picnic with Migs making passes right up to the missle envelope and all kinds of boats. Our job was to rescue downed pilots so it was not a pleasure cruise. We had our own dead and wounded that year. The night the chopper was hit, Captain Slifer headed straight for the NV coast at flank speed to close with and recover the helo. When it landed we counted 52 holes in the aircraft.
Just so you know, the pages in TOUR OF DUTY have the same exageration and fantasy as the rest of the book. I sent you guys $250 yesterday. Keep up the good work
