As Vietnam Veterans we are supposed to be John Kerry’s "Band of Brothers." Let’s just see what our “War Hero” senator has legislatively done for his "Band of Brothers" over the years.
His first six years in the Senate he managed to propose a staggering total of three veterans’ related bills. These were S1033, S1510 and S2128. None saw the light of day and were killed deader than doornails. But, he did propose an amendment to S2884. It croaked too.
The next twelve full years of frenetic pro-vet activity yielded a net ZERO veterans bills. ZERO.
As a career capstone, in the 108th Congress, leveraging two full decades of seniority, and concurrently deciding to run for the Presidency, Kerry sponsored a record tying one veteran’s related bill, S1112. It, shockingly, came to a very bad end just like all the others.
But, to plus up our national security and balance out his already strong defense portfolio, he proposed a 1995 bill gutting $1.5 billion from the intelligence budget. No co-sponsors, not one, signed onto the bill and it never made it to the Senate floor.
The previous year, Kerry proposed a bill to slash another $1 billion from the budgets of the National Foreign Intelligence Program and from Tactical Intelligence, and freezing their budgets. That bill was, surprise, surprise, rejected. Is the word “ineffectual” appropriate?
We will soon be insulted by the sight of Kerry on stage at his convention surrounded by admiring vets. One is left to wonder if they will have more plausibility than the fake vets he represented before Congress in 1971. Somehow, I doubt it.
