I'm sorry if this has been presented on another thread but it's new to me. Kerry keeps insisting that Bush intends to reinstate the draft, but it sounds like he (Kerry) has sinister plans for mandatory 'service'. Anybody know any more about this?

To date, the only efforts to reinstate a draft were proposed by two Democrats, Rangle and Hollings. Last week, the bill was soundly defeated in Congress, by Republicans.

The only signatories on the bill were Democrats in Congress. We have discussed it before and I'm sure a search will reveal which threads.

Here is a link also showing the bill and it's co-sponsors

right - I'm aware that the dems had a bill for a draft, and it was soundly defeated a few days ago. What I am refering to here is one of Kerry's PLANS. This was posted for awhile on his web site, but has now been removed. It is very 'nuanced' - could be refering to a military draft, a Peace Corp type service, who knows.

Kerry/Edwards "authored" a book, "Our Plan For America," that is available for free pdf download on their site. In chapter one, he "discusses" his plan for strengthening the military. Excerpts read;

Quote:
We will send a clear message to every man and
woman in our armed forces: We guarantee that you will
always be the best-led, best-equipped, and most respected
fighting force in the world. You will be armed with
the right weapons, trained in the right skills, and fully
prepared to win on the battlefield. You will never again
be sent into harm’s way without enough troops for the
task, nor asked to fight a war without a plan to win the
peace. And you will never be given assignments which
have not been clearly defined and for which you are not
professionally trained.

To rise to the challenges we face, we must strengthen our
military, including our Special Forces; improve our
17
technology; renew our commitment to the brave men
and women who serve our country, and their families;
and respect the advice, wisdom, and experience of our
professional military.

As a first step, we will expand America’s active duty
forces...

We need to expand the number of active duty soldiers,
not to increase the number of soldiers in Iraq, but
to sustain our overseas deployments and prevent and
prepare for other possible conflicts... We also need to
increase our capabilities in several areas, including:
Special Forces, the troops who land behind enemy lines,
OUR PLAN FOR AMERICA
18
conduct counter-terrorism operations, perform reconnaissance
missions, and gather intelligence; civil affairs
troops, those who work with local leaders and officials
to get schools back in shape, hospitals reopened, and
banks up and running; and military police, experts in
securing public order. We will:
. Expand America’s active duty forces by 40,000,
. Double the Army’s Special Forces capability within
four years, while adding a special operations helicopter
squadron to the Air Force
,
. Increase by 50 percent the number of civil affairs troops
trained in the special responsibilities of post-conflict
reconstruction
,
. Increase our military police, because public order is
critical to establishing the conditions that allow peace
to take hold
,
. Add 500 “psychological operations” personnel and
augment their language training
.

We need a practical and specific plan for making our forces stronger by
making them smarter. We offer a military modernization
plan that will:
. Create more fully modernized “digital divisions,”
equipped with the latest communications technology crucial
to future military success
,
. Create new “anti-proliferation” units trained and
equipped to find and destroy nuclear, chemical and biological
weapons, and to secure the facilities that produce
them
,
. Provide full support for 21st century education and
training for our troops, including training in how to deal
effectively with culturally diverse civilian populations
.

We will also focus defense dollars on investing in the
right technologies, including:
. Advanced communications and information technologies,
to give our troops a crucial advantage in situational
awareness and coordinating operations
,
. Sensing and control technologies, including robotic
systems that minimize the risk of casualties
,
OUR PLAN FOR AMERICA
20
. Precision weapons, including “directed energy” weapons
that can incapacitate the enemy, without risking the
lives of innocent bystanders, for use in areas with large
civilian populations
.

What they fail to address is specifically how they intend to accomplish all this. I see no other way to implement all the additional personal and technology they promise without reinstituting some sort of draft and raising taxes through the ceiling, for everyone, not just the wealthy.

For any who do not wish to visit their site but would like a copy of the pdf file, PM me and I'll email it to you. What little I read was hard to do and keep my lunch down Wink

John Kerry Outlines Plan to Require Service for High School Students

Part of 100 days Plan to Enlist One Million Americans in National Service A Year

On September 11th, 2001, America experienced the most terrible and deadly attack in its history. John Kerry believes we need to think big and do better and get more young Americans serving the nation.

As part of his 100 day plan to change America, John Kerry will propose a comprehensive service plan that includes requiring mandatory service for high school students and four years of college tuition in exchange for two years of national service.

This is the paragraph I'm talking about. It was on his web site for awhile but has been removed. The address to the page is in my first posting. What kind of mandatory service was he refering to? What exactly is "national service"?

I read/heard somewhere that Teresa HK mentioned this in Oregon. She referred to it as 'Community Service'.

I'm not sure what she meant by that though......

Maybe someone without an excruciating headache can dig it up.

One of the interesting things about the left in this country (the word liberal isn't accurate -- a true liberal believes first and foremost about liberty -- not bigger government) is that many of them are all in favor of "national service".

Of course, the concept of manditory military service is something they all hate.

However, the seem to get wood over the concept of forcing young people into labor so long as it is some gigantic social program building their pet causes.

Defense of the country in time of emergency doesn't seem to ever make that list.

Just think of all the liberal cushy jobs that creates! Not so the military; not only is it somewhat hazardous, but "administrators" are required to have some pretty tough training.

According to Kerry, during the last debate this "military service plan" was one of the agenda's he had to cut in order to make his budget supposedly work. Apparently, a portion of it he still looks to push, such as the 40,000 new military and doubling the size of Special Forces, but all the other programs, at least according to him have been scaled back or eliminated to make his "plan" we hear so much about work, because you know, he is going to cut the deficit in half over 4 years Very Happy
