Being a rural individual myself, I find this study fascinating. I wonder if land onership has any thing to do with it. My folk have been for generations land owners. I don't know many city folk who really comprehend the mentality of land ownership, how a direct and personal relationship to the land molds ones thinking. For me, the land is my link to God and I can't think of it any other way. I feel it most strongly when I'm out in my garden weeding and planting. City folk just pass by as if they were in another world totally unaware of my existence. Which is fine with me. Their heads are usually filled with so much hassle and soap opera nonsence that it's impossible to carry on a conversation without getting draged into their nightmare.

This is a very interesting article. But I'll suggest that there is one factor the author did not consider that is very important: self-reliance. I have no data to prove it, but intuitively I feel that the further one gets from the big city core, the more one develops a sense of self-reliance. And a sense of self-reliance, or not, makes for worlds of difference in one's political and sociological outlook. (Granted, today, nobody is totally self-reliant, but the degree of self-reliance is the critical element in this argument.)

I sure hope "we taxpayers" didn't shell any money out for the obvious.
On second thought, maybe those people who have never been out of "blue zones" need the info.
On third thought ... nah.
When I was a child, people from New York (city) actually thought paved roads did not exist west of Ohio, and we (Nebraskans) didn't have cars.

We had a car, but I still had to carry my horse to school.
Uphill, both ways ... Laughing

I think the author's caveat is already applicable.
-Immigration has altered agriculture as much as technology.
-Cities have more diverse cultures competing, consequently public
reference and practice of "traditional" values is altered considerably.
-Dense urban areas increase some of the negatives referred to in the article,
however I believe a major component is with anonymity comes
less detection and accountability of wrongdoing.
-Oddly, almost all of the symbols re: George Bush denote independence.
-Manufacture and other heavy industry has always been concentrated in
the North and East. Small states, more jobs etc.
-Large square mile areas have always been farming, ranching, small
industry oriented. Cost of delivering many services were always
different.
-The South has ALWAYS been the ONLY region of the US that has had a very DISTINCT CULTURE OF ITS OWN.
-It is interesting to note that people of lower income have been demonstrably
more generous than people of higer incomes. I speak of an individual level. Not philanthropic organizations etc.)
-Many studies have show that Southern Hospitality is real. The last state/city to win that title was Nashville, TN.
-Most non-industrial states naturally do not have UNION influence. Not so in the industrial ones.
-Regarding payouts, those industries have more benefits to offer the
job holders than does the agriculture community.
An old saying, "There is strength in numbers" is still relevant to a degree.
However, minority organizations, on occastion are more vocal and effective.
Immigrants, crime, technology are all mobile and have made a dramatic
impact on America.

Changes in media, college campuses and communication has made
certain that we will never be the same.
Let us not forget that at some level even weather plays a part.

It is strange, by the time we get all the answers, the questions have changed.

I fell that the more self-reliant an individual is, the less likely he or she is to liberal. Liberalism means reliance on government. The more used one is to fending for one's self the less likely they are to surrender that ability.

People in larger population centers tend not to produce any of their own food, tend to rely on public transit to get around and rely on public utilities for electical power and heat.

People in rural areas tend grow gardens and can or freeze the produce. Some even grow their own beef, pork and poultry. Often this augmented by deer, fish and other wild game. While rural areas have electrical power, weather can kock it out for up to days at a time. So many have standby generators to provide power for themselves. Natural gas for cooking and heating is supplied by public utilities, but not to all areas. Even areas that have natural gas available manyperfer to buy their own fuel oil or propane. Many augment their heat with wood that they cut or buy from woodcutters. Public transportation is used mainly by college students or the elederly who can't drive.

So it seems that were you live tends to make you more or less self-reliant. The less self reliant you are the easier it is to accept an even lesser level. Whereas those who are more self-reliant tend to be proud of it and fight to give even a little of it up. That why in our rural areas the elderly fight tooth and nail to stay in their homes before moving into assisted living apartments. That is why some widows still mow their own lawns when they're in their eighties. That is why we think guns have a purpose other than murdering people. That is why we don't want the government doing things for us that we are perfectly capable of doing ourselves.

Ya got it, Scotty! You don't even have to get out into rural areas to see the phenomenon at work. It's no secret that home improvement stores have most of their outlets in the suburbs.

And a sense of personal responsibility goes right along with self-reliance. Show me a self-reliant person, who takes personal responsibility for his/her actions, and I'll show you - almost always- a Conservative, and certainly a non-Communist/Socialist/Progressive.

A friend of mine told of once visiting a relative in Chicago. She was on food stamps and was complaining that it wasn't enough to live on. He looked around the kitchen and all he saw was prepared foods, the most expensive kind of food there is. After talking to her awhile he became convinced that if she had 10# of ground beef, a pork roast, a whole chicken, a 20# sack of potatos, 5# of onions, 5# of flour, 2# of raw carrots, yeast, salt and pepper, she still would not have a thing she could make to eat.

Your government at work making peoples lives better.
