Found this writing about Sunday's (1/9/05) Slicksty Minutes program:

MAJOR ERRORS IN 60 MINUTES REPORTING

"Investigative" Reporting Show Shows Its Bias. . . Reporter Ed Bradley on Sunday's 60 Minutes television show at least twice avoided opportunities to assure Americans that the mandatory FBI criminal background check required before any retail purchase of a firearm is one of the ways to prevent terrorists from buying guns in America. That's true whether a dealer is selling guns at a gun show or in a store. In a story prompted by California's outlawing future purchases of .50 BMG rifles, Bradley broadcast hype and misinformation from gun prohibitionist Tom Diaz of the Violence Policy Center to create a scare about attacks on airplanes and chemical storage facilities that have never occurred. Diaz is hoping to repeat in other states California's ban on .50 caliber rifles by promoting their image as a terrorist tool. Rifle manufacturer Ronnie Barrett calls such hype an attempt to precipitate an attack. Indeed, since shortly after terrorists struck with box cutters on September 11, 2001, the VPC Web site discussion of .50 calibers outlines ways to attack aircraft and other vulnerable targets, discussing the kind of ammunition to be used and even supplying maps indicating where tank farm storage of petroleum and dangerous chemicals can be located by terrorists or other deranged persons. Then, the 60 Minutes story concluded with a boldly false assertion from Diaz when Bradley asked, "Aren't records kept when a gun is sold?" "The answer is no!" Diaz falsely asserted in the broadcast, despite the fact that law enforcement routinely tracks gun ownership by using a permanent record-keeping system on retail gun sales begun in 1968. Bradley and the CBS producers responsible for the segment are being asked by NSSF to broadcast a correction to their story.

One hit right after another for SleezeBS. This time it's Ed Badly rather than Dan Blather.

Isn't the Violence Policy Center the new name for Sarah Brady's old Handgun Control Inc? The anti-gun crowd has been lying so long that they don't know how to tell the truth. CBS has been a big aid to them in their campaign; for instance, when the assault weapons ban was set to expire CBS rans stories on it and the guns shown firing were full autos. Although full autos had nothing to do with the ban, they were more than happy to leave that impressionthat they did. When they got called on it, they plead insanity and said that that was not the intent. Yeah right, somehow they never seem to screw up by putting on footage showing the correct type of guns. You could have a story about single shot .22s and they would show uzis. Credibility? Wake me up when they finally get some.

CBS News Switches to Reality Gameshow Format
by Scott Ott

(2005-01-11) -- When life hands you a lemon, the old saying goes, make lemonade. CBS News President Andrew Heyward is doing just that, announcing today that the CBS Evening News with Dan Rather will be re-launched on March 10 as Myopic Zeal: The CBS Evening News Gameshow.

"It's edgy, it's hip and it capitalizes on our key asset -- intermittent credibility," said Mr. Heyward, who survived a recent epidemic of myopic zeal which proved terminal for four of his staff. "Since the internal investigation report, viewers have wondered if we could ever be trusted again. Instead of trying to rebuild that shattered credibility, which would take years and millions of dollars, we're going to roll with the punches."

The new show will feature the same set, the same reporters and the same style as Evening News Classic, but during each segment viewers can go to a website and vote on which elements of each story may be false, or at least lacking adequate authentication. Prizes will include cash and a chance to become a 'Myopic Zeal' correspondent for a day, which includes the full training course in ethics which 'big-time journalists' now receive.

"It gets the viewers involved in the story in a way that was possible before only on a blog," said Mr. Heyward. "We've taken a hard look at the blogosphere and decided, if you can't beat them, join them. We'll even let the viewers vote on why the errors were made, whether by myopic zeal, political subterfuge or gross incompetence."

The embattled news czar said production costs for the new show would be the same as the old, "since the reporters and producers won't have to do anything differently."

The network has begun talks with Mr. Rather's talent agent in hopes of pulling him out of semi-retirement to sign him as 'anchor' for the new show.

"For decades, Dan Rather has been our face and voice of intermittent credibility and myopic zeal," said Mr. Heyward. "Sure, there are others in this industry who are as zealous and as credible but he's the Tiffany anchor, having done for this network what anchors do best."
