Has anyone heard why he went to the Republican side? Seem's funny the same week that this ad came out. Anyway it doesn't matter. I am concerned that it is a plot by the DU so he can't be challenged and beaten by a Republican therefore they hold on to the seat. We will see how he votes and then we will know. Semper Fi.

I read that after voting for taxcuts and to support the war on terror, he was getting pressure to abandon his beliefs and vote the party line. In making the change before the election he is allowing the voters to weigh in on his decision. Sen. Landreau has called him a "coward" for doing so, but Jim Jeffords was a "hero" for switching after being voted in as a Republican. Do these people really have their heads so far up their collective a**es that they think the voting public has no memory of something that happened just 3 1/2 years ago?

I'm from Louisiana, and I think I remember reading yesterday (I'm too lazy to dig the paper out) that he switched 1) because he found himself voting more conservative than liberal and 2) he switched at the last minute so the Dems couldn't run a strong Dem, meaning that the seat would be Republican. There's also speculation that that could backfire, but the lone Dem candidate isn't well-known.

Oh, phooey. Let me see if I can dig up a link. Sorry, no link for the article in the Baton Rouge paper that ran yesterday.

He qualified first as a Dem, then showed up 30 minutes before qualifying ended at 5 p.m. Friday and qualified as a Republican.

"I just felt like I got pushed out," Alexander said. "My personal philosophy didn't jibe with the national (Democratic) party."

Later in the article, after the usual bad-mouthing from Dems John Breaux and Democratic Party chairman Mike Skinner, there's more.

Alexander said he went to Washington as a "Louisiana Democrat" and has always been pro-life, pro-business, pro-gun, and pro-family. "I'm ashamed of some of the things that the Democratic Party stands for. I just think at this point, at the national level, I can better represent the people of the 5th District as a Republican," he said.

Alexander did not attend the Democratic National Convention and is not supporting Democratic presidential candidate U.S. Sen. John Kerry.
