I just saw on the Drudgereport that the FEC is looking in on political activities (of supposedly bloggers). I am all for some restrictions (i.e., Janet Jackon, etc.) but this does not sound too good to me. They might me going too far on this in my opinion.

They would have to show where they have any jurisdiction. What with McCain-Feingold they are out of their authority anyway. McCain and Hagel are two Republicans I can do without as far as interfering with policy goes. Constitutional protection is for political speech, not porn.

From Drudge:

FEC May Tighten Restrictions On Internet Political Activity
Mon Feb 14 2005 10:38:41 ET

The Federal Election Commission next month will begin looking at tightening restrictions on political activities on the Internet, ROLL CALL reports Monday.

The FEC is planning to examine the question of how Internet activities, when coordinated with candidates' campaigns, fit into the definition of 'public communications.

Specifically, the FEC is planning to examine the question of how Internet activities, when coordinated with candidates' campaigns, fit into the definition of "public communications." While coordinated communications are considered campaign contributions and therefore subject to strict contribution limits, current FEC regulations adopted in 2002 carve out an exemption for coordinated political communications that are transmitted over the Internet.

Developing...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I thought FEC has no regulatory jurisdiction over the internet.

I don't see how they can limit contributions unless they can'prove'coordination with a campaign.
I know John McCain wants to amend his Campaign Finance Reform Bill
to eliminate 527's such as the SWIFTVETS.

It seems the key is "...when coordinated with candidates' campaigns".

Obviously the definition of "coordination" will need to be specifically defined, but can you imagine the maelstrom of finger-pointing that would have ensued had a broad definition been applied during the last campaign? This sounds like a pandora's box just waiting to be opened.

Oh how the educrats & MSM long for the days of the old media. If it was not for the bloggers the Ratherization of the Bush guard record might have changed the outcome of the election. And if it wasn't for the Swift Boat For Truth the outcome would have likely been different. The bloggers certainly have a way of vetting out the truth.

They can long all they want but it aint gonna happen. And if McCain thinks he can control the internet, he needs to join the inventor, wherever he is. Surely, the old media know it's too late. And some of McCain's folks must know the internet is virtually uncontrollable in this country.
