I just watched a show on CNBC about Wal-Mart, which should have been called the Communist Party USA propagandist take on America’s greatest corporation. This show had one Communist organization after another AFL-CIO, NOW, Policy Matters as the voice of reason for all the ills of what is the evil encroachment of Wal-Mart on the helpless poor American communities and the people who are forced to go work for this company. This program showed one side for an entire hour from the Communist perspective without allowing the CEO of Wal-Mart to make statements, allowing only answers to loaded questions. This program also did not reveal the Communist ties the organizations to whom they recieved their doctored information from. Many things were absent from this program.

Wal-Mart is the largest corporation in the world with a market capitalization of over 250 billion dollars. With this great growth many things have happened for the betterment of America and the world.

Wal-Mart revolutionized the way in which consumers were able to obtain goods. Sam Walton had a pretty damn simple theory and it is basically take the Ben Franklin Five and Dime stores with their great selection and give it a greater appeal to the consumer in not just added selection but price and attention to detail which he had learned from working at JC Penney. Walton recalled in his autobiography that when he was a kid working at JC Penney and while folding some dress shirts old man Penny walking by noticed he was folding them incorrectly and stopped and showed him how to fold a shirt so it appealed to the consumer. This amazed the young Walton and was never lost on him in demanding all of his executives to understand this level of detail within Wal-Mart. The way in which Sam revolutionized goods to consumers is now studied throughout American business schools through productivity management. Not only did the Universities in the 80’s take notice of Wal-Mart, but the US military, Fed-Ex, UPS and dragged clawing at the carpet the US postal service did as well and they studied how Wal-Mart was able to move their goods and track their inventories so well that this company was able to deliver goods at 6 percent lower cost to consumers.

Having achieved a 6 percent cost savings in distribution to consumers, Wal-Mart began to demand of their vendors the same level of productivity. In Wal-Mart’s view they could pass on even more savings to the consumer, but the vendors had to become more efficient. Wal-Mart began assessing their vendor’s weaknesses and strengths and making recommendations to gain greater productivity while lowering cost and making the work environment better for the employees. So rather then the government stepping in to create a better workplace it was Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart in 10 years created a greater transformation in the workplace then our government could in 50. Among the great changes were the stock options for employees. Wal-Mart made more grandmothers millionaires in the last 35 years by greeting people walking into their stores with a shopping cart then IBM has with engineers in the history of the corporation.

We have all learned about the abuse of stock options by executives to create false wealth at the expense of their employees by companies such as Enron, Global Crossing, World Com, Tyco and so on, but what no one mentions is the fact that Wal-mart stock has better backing then US treasury notes. Wal-mart has their financial strength whereas the government has their promise to pay. I will place my dollar on Wal-mart.

As for the radical left continuing to bash and hammer this company, Wal-mart will survive because when we forget our travel bag and are in a foreign place, Wal-Mart will be there to make sure we have everything we need and we will be thankful for it. I sure as hell do not want to go to a Target store with no product. Target would have us believe they did Sam Walton’s strategy of widening aisle space better by making it even larger, while I would argue Target has to make their aisles larger to take up space in ever growing buildings to keep up the appearance of competing with Wal-Mart. In reality they cannot even stock their shelves. Target reminds me of 70’s Ben Franklin stores. But Target is the choice of the left as they pursue their attack on Wal-Mart. I just hope people remember at some point everything good that Wal-mart has done for our country and the world. This is not a company to be reviled, but rather admired.

I want to clarify that I do not and have never worked for Wal-Mart, rather I study all great things regardless of what they are. And Wal-Mart qualifies as truly great to me.

Great post, GenrXer! I have a story about Target and Walmart. It
just so happens that our Walmart is located at one of the busiest
intersections in NC, not just in Jacksonville. It is so busy that, even
though it has a huge parking lot, you have to drive around waiting
for someone to leave in order to get a spot that is not a mile away.

On the other hand, Target is located a little further down the same
street, away from that intersection. It is much more convenient to
just park and run in to pick up an item or two. Once Target opened,
I completely stopped going to Walmart and had not even been in the
store for several years.

What changed my mind? Last Christmas, Target chose to express
its liberal, anti-Christian views by banning the Salvation army from
collecting donations under the guise of an obscure "no solicitations"
policy that they obviously had ignored for many years. This deprived
this great organization of a major source of donations in communities
where they had come to depend on Target. I "bit the bullet" and went
back to Walmart. Now I wonder how I managed to go so long without
shopping there. As for Target? This conservative, Christian, Southern
fifty-something woman intends to keep up my little boycott against
the store. Withdrawing my little bit of business may hardly amount to
a "drop in the bucket" to Target, but it gives me a lot of personal
satisfaction!

I'm not really trying to boycott anyone. I'm just an early riser and
on the weekends, after sleeping in a couple of hours, getting my
coffee fix and generally waking up, I feel like shopping. It's about
8 in the morning and everything except Wally World is closed up tight
until at least 9. The mall opens around 10. So by the time that these
folks dien to open up, I'm already done with my shopping and I'm
doing something else.

I'm riding the fence on this one. I watched the same show and I've heard a little bit of both sides of this story and I'm not so sure. I get what you're saying about certain backers, but I don't think it's inappropriate to say that eveyone who oppose Walmart taking over the world and putting small business out of business, are communist. I certainly am not and one thing that struck me most from my experience shopping there, I can tell you that I've had problems finding a salesperson to help me at 8am because they are all up in front of the store getting indoctrinated for the day. If you've never heard it, go take a listen someday. I also find it suspicious that they spend so much money for television ads letting us all know just how wonderful a company they are. Me thinks they dost protest too much and in the words of Mraz, "Something on the surface stinks". Just my 2cents

I too have changed my mind about Wal-Mart several times. The greatest crime for which they are publicly reviled seems to be an excessive use of illegal aliens. Following no mean amount of study, I'm now inclined to agree with GenrXr for this reason. Wal-Mart seems to have followed the law and customs of this country. If they had not used illegal aliens, a widespread custom in this country, they would have voluntarily forfeited their ability to compete. The reason is virtually every company that uses large numbers of relatively unskilled labor also use illegal aliens.

I have no doubt that if the border were closed and cheap illegal alien labor suddenly became unavailable, Wal-Mart would continue to beat the department stores, grocery stores, auto parts stores, etc., simply because they get it. I really dislike department and auto parts stores because you cannot buy a ream of paper, a shirt and a car battery in the same place. I also dislike "awards cards" and other tricky little gimmicks used to lure grocery buyers. Wal-Mart charges the same amount to everyone every time regardless of gimmicks.

Interestingly enough, Wal-Mart became the largest grocer in the Dallas Metroplex two years ago. And Tom Thumb, Albertsons, Kroger and others continue to plod as they always have, even though their market shares are in serious decline.

[emphasis mine]

So what's in it for the AFL-CIO?? Why are they doing this??

Wal-Mart employs around $2 million people.

If the AFL-CIO were able to unionize Wal-Mart:

2 million employees * $200-$400 = $400-$800 MILLION in FORCED UNION DUES!

I wonder if that is reason enough?? Gee, he wouldn't want to get control of all that money and Wal-Mart's labor force!! NOOOOOOOOO......... Only those "bad" capitalists would be motivated so selfishly!!

Mr. Sweeny, head of the AFL-CIO and admitted socialist, only believes money is bad when HE doesn't control it!

I didn't see the program, but I'd bet anyone dinner at Red Lobster, that the AFL-CIO take was they "only want to help those poor, mistreated, oppressed Wal-Mart employees out of the goodness of our altruistic UNION heart."

What, of course they really mean, is that they (the AFL-CIO) wants to be the ones who make Wal-Mart employees poor, mistreated, and oppressed AND HAVE TO PAY THOSE UNION DUES to the AFL-CIO to end up in that condition!

I believe you, but do you have resources &/or links for this.

I would like to see this program, but I hate giving CNBC even one minute of my viewership.

Great observations GenrXr! Very Happy

One funny thing that I've noticed about Wally World is that I don't
like their meat department. Those fish, especially, look like they
have been in there too long. I donno. What's odd is that I do buy
meat at Sam's Club. Same folks. But I usually get the bulk of my
meat at the Rock Island Arsenal Commissary Store. Well, that's
why they call it shopping.

While I would have to agree that this program was a UNION propaganda, I do have one problem with WalMart. The problem is that they portray the all American company, but I challenge anyone to find even one product that says Made in America on it in one of their stores. If that isn't bad enough, guess who WalMart buys most of their inventory from??

They buy it from our current enemy China to the tune of 18 Billion per year. While I beieve in free enterprise, I can't help but be bothered by the fact that WalMart is enriching a country that is our enemy with Billions which will be used to destroy America. Take it a little bit further and you can come to the conclusion that by shopping at WalMart, we are helping to seal our own fate for the distruction of America.

Wal-Mart's China inventory to hit US$18b this year
China Daily November 2004

The world's largest retailer, Wal-Mart Stores Inc, says its inventory of stock produced in China is expected to hit US$18 billion this year, keeping the annual growth rate of over 20 per cent consistent over two years.

The trend is expected to continue, company officials revealed.

"We expect our procurement stock from China to continue to grow at a similar rate in line with Wal-Mart's growth worldwide, if not faster," said Lee Scott, the president and CEO (chief executive officer) of Wal-Mart.

"If Wal-Mart were an individual economy, it would rank as China's eighth-biggest trading partner, ahead of Russia, Australia and Canada," Xu said.

Insiders point out Wal-Mart's imports from China have largely influenced the US trade deficit in China, which is expected to reach US$150 billion this year.

For those who don't believe China is our Enemy, then I would ask you to download and read Unrestricted Warfare
By Colonels Qiao Liang and Wang Xiangsui
Introduction by Al Santoli

from Newsmax.com
As incredible as it may be to believe, three years before the Sept. 11 bombing of the World Trade Center a Chinese military manual titled Unrestricted Warfare touted such an attack – suggesting it would be difficult for the U.S. military to cope with.

Here is an excerpt from Unrestricted Warfare:

“Whether it be the intrusions of hackers, a major explosion at the World Trade Center, or a bombing attack by bin Laden, all of these greatly exceed the frequency bandwidths understood by the American military...”

Surprisingly, Osama bin Laden is mentioned frequently in this book.

Is anyone concerned??

I will admit, Wal-mart has their stuff together. Coming from the small towns of the Texas Panhandle (small meaning well under 15,000) there is a trend occurring inthe rural areas that you don't hear about.

When Wal-mart opens a new store in Littletown, USA it can and does dominate the *rural market*. Many small towns have lost the mom & pop operations they used to have to the Wal-mart effect.

If you live in a well populated area(15,000+), you'll never notice Wal-mart making so much as a scratch on their competition. Go to a small town? Look around carefully. If there's a Wal-mart store or SuperCenter around you'll find that many of the local retail shops have closed. Drive down Main Street in Borger Texas can be a real eye opener.

Yes, it gives back to the communities it serves. Wal-mart also drains the local economy at the same time, thus making it hard for anyone but the giga-corp Wal-mart to survive.

Many thanks for the pointer to the book. I've scan read parts and it certainly deserves close reading. A bit strange on the "golden mean" and "rhetoric as military strategy" sections which I didn't understand on first glance.

Here's a bit from today's China Daily you should like:

Quote:
A recent poll showed about two thirds of Chinese have a favourable opinion of Americans

and maybe Walmart's 18 billion a year helps...

Quote:
More than 90 per cent of respondents agreed that economic ties have promoted more political ties and personal friendships between the two countries' governments and people.

Quote:
As the poll indicates, the majority of Chinese public have a good opinion about Americans and American society

That's what I've heard! How awful for those folks. But the 'argument' on this is, as I have heard, is that they are not doing anything illegal. Something else I heard recently, don't know if it is true, is that there is some huge number of Walmart employees dependent on government assistant because of the low wages, which of course, low wages are not illegal either. If that's true though, it kind of negates those advertisements they run all the time about how well their employees are treated. I'd like to know the percentage of full time to part time workers, the payscale, and number of employess receiving medical benefits. I'll have to do some research. It's not the kind of information they are likely to broadcast on the instore, early morning, 'walmart' radio program;)

I saw this in the news

http://www.courant.com/business/hc-husky0304.artmar04,0,3058369.story?coll=hc-headlines-business

"We don't design our plans to be supplemented by public assistance," said Dan Fogleman, a Wal-Mart spokesman. "Nor do we encourage our associates to apply for these programs."

But a Congressional report last year found that Wal-Mart had increased the health-benefit waiting period for full-time workers. In 2002, the waiting period jumped from 90 days to six months. By comparison, the report found, the average waiting period for employers the size of Wal-Mart was 1.3 months.

The report also found that Wal-Mart changed the definition of part-time in 2002, raising it to 34 hours or fewer a week, up from 28 hours or fewer - a stricter definition than many companies.

Part-time workers must wait two years to apply for health coverage and they cannot add a spouse or children.

Monthly premiums for a family start at about $155 a month, but carry a $1,000 deductible. Wal-Mart could not immediately provide a range for monthly premiums for families that would carry a lower deductible.

The 1,028 Wal-Mart employees in the HUSKY program represent 11.3 percent of the retailer's 9,082 state workers.

and in Iowa:

http://www.woi-tv.com/Global/story.asp?S=3032298

sure, it's only 800+ in Iowa, and 1000+ in CT, but should any people with a job have to get federal assistance also?

and then there is this:

http://www.fastcompany.com/magazine/77/walmart.html

a long read, but interesting.
