Hundreds of blank driver's licenses have been stolen from a DMV office in North Las Vegas. Nevada's Homeland Security office expressed concern about this robbery Monday night.
More than 1,700 blank licenses are missing from this DMV. The concerns are identity theft, illegal immigration and the possibility of terrorism. Along with the blank licenses the thieves made off with equipment needed to make the IDs.
Shattered glass, tire marks, and brown boards mark where the thieves broke through the DMV's large windows. What you won't see are the cameras to take driver's licenses, a computer, and a printer, all were stolen in the early morning hours.
Kevin Malone, with the DMV, can't say if this was an inside job, but does say the thieves knew what they wanted. "I would say so. It pretty much looks like they had a plan and got out very quick."
But Malone says the equipment stolen should not raise concerns of possible identity theft, "There was little or no personal data on the PC that was taken."
There are concerns of terrorism. Eyewitness News contacted Nevada Homeland Security and they learned of the break-in through Channel 8 Eyewitness News.
The office released this statement; "In this country we use driver's licenses for everything -- to buy airline tickets. The main concern we have is a driver's license is used to verify who you are and allow you into airplanes, cash checks, rent cars. It's a government issued card accepted around for ID purposes. We are concerned anytime we have blank ID cards like this missing."
But the DMV says the robbers don't have much to work with. "There is no particular benefit in using our equipment. If they take this equipment it won't produce anything," explained Kevin Malone.
And if they are, Malone offers what to be on the look out for. "The thing to watch out for, is the Nevada seal, the numbers that are encrypted, and that there is no record behind it."
There are no surveillance cameras inside the DMV. Eyewitness News asked why.
Kevin Malone said, quote, "That's up to our administration. We haven't debated much over it, that's a big budgeting problem." |

They took the computers - DMV says they can't use them without logging into the state's servers. I think they'll be able to do this and that scares me.
Nevada licenses aren't hard to counterfeit anyway...
We have a huge illegal immigrant population here and INS does nothing.
I think we are being annexed to Mexifornia LOL

I liked the idea of a bounty, not 1k but a mere 300 bucks a head. there a re plenty of takers out there that would jump on the program, just think how much the states could save on public services. It would be fun to see how many jobs americans refuse to do, like roofing, siding,sheetrocking, concrete,landscaping,carpet laying, --- shucks I just remembered, they only pick fruit?

FBI Warns of 'Special Interest' Aliens

WASHINGTON (AP) - FBI Director Robert Mueller told Congress on Tuesday that people from countries with ties to al-Qaida have crossed into the United States from Mexico, using false identities. "We are concerned, Homeland Security is concerned about special interest aliens entering the United States," Mueller said, using a term for people from countries where al-Qaida is known to be active.
Under persistent questioning from Rep. John Culberson, R-Texas, Mueller said he was aware of one route that takes people to Brazil, where they assume false identities, and then to Mexico before crossing the U.S. border.
He also said that in some instances people with Middle Eastern names have adopted Hispanic last names before trying to get into the United States.
Mueller provided no estimate of the number of people who have entered the country in this manner.
Bush administration officials have previously said al-Qaida could try to infiltrate the United States through the Mexican border. CONTINUED

North Las Vegas police were following several leads in the DMV case, department spokesman Officer Tim Bedwell said. He said the initial investigation was hampered by the lack of video surveillance. Lewis said she was seeking federal and state funds to install cameras at DMV offices throughout Nevada.
Police said thieves smashed a vehicle through a back wall of the office and escaped before police arrived a half-hour later.
In addition to the computer, thieves took a camera, 1,700 license blanks and laminated plastic covers bearing the embossed state seal. Authorities said the equipment could be used to manufacture licenses virtually indistinguishable from legitimate Nevada driver's licenses. The state's top homeland security adviser said he notified federal Homeland Security officials about the break-in. |
I don't know what to say about this .. data not encrypted (but the DMV "thought it was" -?), no cameras, building smashed into and a half hour passes before police arrive. All this while a nation stands on guard, one would think by now, with regards to identity theft -- a personal financial disaster for some, and perhaps a terrorist-enabling disaster for all of us. One would think that at the very least they would have had cameras (not helpful, I suppose, if this was an inside job....) What a mess.

Just joined and was quite interested in the article by Ken Ritter AP, regarding the Nevada DMV break-in. Strange how little info, if any, was in our local papers in Dallas... However, Las Vegas, the "City of Excess-Excess and Exploitation of the Environment" has a most powerful PR system which will do anything to keep the hordes of tourists and gamblers revolving through those mega lit gates....at any cost. At this point, it would seem that one would be more safe doing "Choctow Bingo" in Oklahoma ala James McMurty, since your chances of being run over by a licensed or unlicensed driver are far less!

The insurance rates here reflect the influx of "other"drivers (commonly called tourists). I pay more for two relatively new (2002) vehicles than my brother in California does for 4 vehicles. I can't get my children licenses because I simply can not afford to put them on my policy. So they ride the bus. Illegals here buy cars from small lots - never insure them and run away when they are in accidents. They use names that are so common among their communities, the police can't always find the right person. Now they have access to thousands of "new" names.
One point that has not been covered, the DMV office broken into was - THE ONE THAT ISSUES COMMERCIAL LICENSES -you know for the big trucks that will make great bombs???????????
The computers also had drivers histories for those who renewed there.

I noted that as well.
I ride the bus here as well. My roomies have a car so I use theirs if I need to. Insurance here is as bad as it was in NJ.
