President Talabani does not believe in the death penalty....the good news is that he can be overridden by his two vice-presidents. I have no mercy for Saddam.....he deserves the death penalty.

Saddam on trial 'in two months'

The trial of Saddam Hussein could begin within two months, Iraq's president, Jalal Talabani, said yesterday.

Speaking on the US news channel CNN, President Talabani said "the court of Iraq will decide the future of Saddam Hussein" and that most Iraqis wanted the former dictator executed if found guilty of crimes against humanity.

Asked when the trial would begin, he replied: "I hope within two months."

Since his arrrest in December 2003, Saddam has been held by the US at a detention centre near Baghdad's airport, waiting to be charged along with other former regime leaders.

President Talabani's estimate for a trial is much earlier than a date in the first half of next year aired by lawyers and judges connected to the Iraqi Special Tribunal.

Iraqi and US legal advisers have hinted that other leaders such as Ali Hassan al Majid, known as Chemical Ali, would be tried first, to test the tribunal's efficacy and to help build the case against Saddam.

But senior figures in Iraq's new government have made no secret of their desire to see his trial as soon as possible, believing it will help restore public confidence shaken by the ferocious insurgency.

Human rights organisations have repeatedly warned the Iraqi authorities of the consequences of rushing the trial and have criticised the workings of the tribunal.

A source close to the investigation into Saddam said yesterday that one problem with bringing forward the trial was that there was as yet a lack of reliable evidence from some of the mass graves.

Since it was established under occupation in December 2003, the tribunal has been dogged by personnel problems and accusations of inefficiency and lack of transparency. The first person to head the supposedly independent body resigned in 2004 amid allegations of corruption against him and his uncle, Ahmed Chalabi, now deputy prime minister. His replacement, Judge Ammar al-Bakri, was criticised for being too close to the former interim prime minister, Ayed Allawi.

It really is appauling if you figure that there are American Attorneys that want to defend that murdering piece of slime.

The sad thing is really how ignorant these lawyer ******** are....don't they know that the terrorists will want to kill them anyhow, even if they do defend him? They do not care, Christian, American, yah go ahead and defend the arse...they do not care they will kill Americans and Christians for just that, being American and Christian.

And these so called human rights groups worry about Saddam..........it is totally sick and beyond my comprehension, infact, I do not want to comprehend that sort of irony. Evil or Very Mad

Feet first into the wood chipper would still be too good for him.

Well, maybe if the chipper was set to "slow."

Three days? A few millimeters at a time?
