If it takes a famous astronaut to knock on the door or the president of the United States to call on the phone to remind people to vote Tuesday, the stakes in that election must be high.
Or perhaps it just means supporters of both candidates in the 2nd Congressional District - Republican Jean Schmidt and Democrat Paul Hackett - are scared to death that people in the seven-county southern Ohio district might forget there is an election Tuesday.

With only hours remaining before the polls open for the special election to fill the vacant 2nd District congressional seat, the candidates - Republican Jean Schmidt and Democrat Paul Hackett - are scrambling to make sure the party faithful make it to the polls.
In a special election in August, with nothing else on the ballot, whoever does the best job getting core constituencies to the polls will emerge victorious because swing voters won't go to the polls, said Alfred Tuchfarber, a professor of American government and elections at the University of Cincinnati.

In a related note, there's an ugly smear campaign afoot against a Schmidt staffer that's getting traction and attention in the leftist blogworld (to include none other than KOS and "you-know-who"). If this allegation is unfounded (in fact the result of some "dirty trick" department), some folks, IMHO, are gonna find themselves on the wrong end of a libel suit. |
