Press Bias in the Kerry Swift-Boat Story

August 11 , 2004
by Mark Landsbaum
The mainline press exhibits its bias over and over, while piously claiming to be neutral.

Case in point: For months the press screamed in headlines and newscasts that President Bush was “AWOL” from National Guard duty 30 years ago.

The charges which were aired in the 2000 election, not only weren’t substantiated, they seemed to materialize out of the vapor. There was not a shred of evidence. In fact, the charges were based entirely on the absence of evidence: No record can be found, therefore …

Such blatant bias in advancing such a dubious story is inexcusable.

Then as the 2004 election neared, the press reflexively resurrected the same old, tired, unproven charges yet again for another several–month run. Nothing new. Still nothing proven. Nothing substantiated. But that didn’t stop the noble press from pursuing “the public’s right to know.”

Now come different accusations.

This time they are about John Kerry and his alleged unfitness to serve as commander in chief. Unlike the spurious charges against the President, these charges are based on the first-hand, personal observations of dozens of men who served under and above Kerry for the four-month period he was in Vietnam, also about three decades ago.

Unlike the charges against Bush, the accusations against Kerry already are verified by eye-witnesses readily available to be interviewed. Medical and deployment records exist, but have not been released or yet inspected.

How has the press reacted?

Unlike the unproven, unsubstantiated charges against the President, the charges against Kerry are being entirely ignored. Instead, the press, Pavloff-like, viciously has attacked the people who make the charges. These military veterans are called names, their motives questioned and they are generally demonized.

All the while, the substance of their charges is ignored.

This is a 180-degree reversal of how the press treated the president.

The president never made an issue of his National Guard service. His opponents did, and that apparently made it fair game.

Kerry has continually made an issue of his Vietnam service, and now he and his cohorts in the press complain when his opponents want to examine it.

While Kerry is duplicitous, posturing as a war hero even though in sworn testimony before Congress he admitted to committing “war crimes,” the press is even less admirable. It’s bias is as clear as Kerry’s opportunism.

Kerry’s Vietnam record should – must – be closely examined because he himself says it’s important to prove he’s fit to command our troops in war time. Dozens of veterans who served with him say exactly otherwise.

And the press should be ashamed. At least in Europe each publication’s bias is printed on its masthead. Left-wingers self-identify in Europe. The U.S. press at the least needs a little honesty in advertising. But they would rather disingenuously claim the noble high ground of neutrality than admit their record of bias. Much as John Kerry tries to elevate himself, despite his record.

How did things get this slanted in the press?!?!
