Panda Express meal too small? Go find a buffet and gorge yourself.

It is amazing how much we take food for granted when it is near, but having spent the past ten months away from Houston have come to appreciate its restaurants more then ever and Panda Express in particular. It is Chinese food with a new take on how it’s prepared. Their shops are clean, no MSG in the food, a view to the kitchen and fresh vegetables. My last expedition into the Chinese buffet came around 15 years ago after having witnessed the kitchen of one too many Chinese restaurants during roofing projects. A Houston health official once commented to me about a joke going around the department, he said “what is the cleanest thing in a Chinese kitchen? The trash can.” At the time I couldn’t help but think how the cleanest thing in a Chinese restaurant is surely the patrons themselves.

Recently, while grabbing some food from the Greens Point Panda I commented how clean the kitchen and fresh the vegetables were to the manager. He replied how he wished everyone appreciated that as opposed to how much they complain over the serving size. I replied “listen you are in a difficult area demographically as well as Panda Express is a new restaurant to Houston and this town is a tough food town. Give it time and as people learn about it you will have more business than you’re able to handle.”

People who would rather have quantity as opposed to quality are an interesting lot. Not long ago at a very expensive buffet I sat down to enjoy a dinner salad they surely could not screw up after sampling Alaskan king crab which had gone bad. There I sat and watched person after person pile plate upon plate with King crab. Sitting down they began to gorge like pigs at the slop tin and it was obvious not a single person had ever tasted fresh Alaskan king crab. Such a pity to go through life and not know some of its most simple pleasures, but if you insist on a larger serving size next time you enter a Panda Express, by all means find a buffet and gorge your tummy silly. Highly doubt you will know the difference.

While you are free to thumb your gastronomic nose and snicker at us porcines who might ignorantly (though blissfully) feed daily at America's troughs, I give you fair warning...

Lay off NYC's "dirty water dog" vendors...they are revered. (Now where did I leave that take-out menu?)

Yes it is a bit snobbish, but at least it isn't about African population management. A favorite of the left. As for NY dirty water dogs, I have yet to have one and it is on my list of foods to have before passing this earth of ours.
