Can one of you swabbies tell me the origins and/or meaning for the term geedunk? My undertstanding is it is a reference to candy, soda etc. In the Army, it's called Poagy Bait.

The Army term refers to "poages" or "poges" who are the REMFS or other office type non-shooters. Example: "Division Poges" Hence the term Poagey Bait, which would be candy, soda used to attract them.

To Sailors, the word geedunk means ice cream, candy, potato chips and other assorted snacks, or even the place where they can be purchased. You purchase geedunk in the Ship's Store. If you buy stuff from a vending machine, you hear "geedunk" as the good stuff drops into the chute.

By the way, we used to have fun with the Marines when they were deployed on our Gator (amphibious landing ship). During a deployment, the Marines don't have much to do until it was time to hit the beach. They would usually clean their weapons, exercise, sleep, or wait in line for chow. Mostly, they stood in line - anywhere. The Ship's Store didnot open until 1030. We would get one of the Boatswain's Mates to stand in front of the Ship's Store around 0630. Inevitably, within 30 minutes there would be 10 or 20 Marines standing behind him. He would then just walk away. The Marines stayed.
