Quote:
American military chiefs have been left dumbstruck by an undetected Chinese submarine popping up at the heart of a recent Pacific exercise and close to the vast U.S.S. Kitty Hawk - a 1,000ft supercarrier with 4,500 personnel on board.

By the time it surfaced the 160ft Song Class diesel-electric attack submarine is understood to have sailed within viable range for launching torpedoes or missiles at the carrier.

According to senior Nato officials the incident caused consternation in the U.S. Navy.

The Americans had no idea China's fast-growing submarine fleet had reached such a level of sophistication, or that it posed such a threat.

One Nato figure said the effect was "as big a shock as the Russians launching Sputnik" - a reference to the Soviet Union's first orbiting satellite in 1957 which marked the start of the space age.

The incident, which took place in the ocean between southern Japan and Taiwan, is a major embarrassment for the Pentagon.

Did anybody else hear about this?

Funny, but after a moment's reflection, I was wondering why we might be interested in letting the Chinese know that we DID know where they were.

Seems like I remember an almost identical event some time ago (in the range of a few months to a year ago). Is this, then, a second such event, or is this just old news? In the first such event I believe there was some considerable hinting at a "behind-the-scenes" story that didn't make it quite so shocking.

But with all the land war scenarios that have been the center of attention for so many years, I'm truly concerned that we've neglected to keep our ASW forces and technology up to date. There may not be many countries anymore who can afford submarines, but they still do exist.

I didn't see any news in this story. Carriers transiting the China Seas (home waters for the Yoko' ported Kitty Hawk) are the objects of exercise for the ROCs, Japanese, ROKs, ANZACs, PRC, US SubRons and in the old days Russkies.

Years back we were on plane guard behind the Ranger. Crew came to the Sig' Bridge to photograph themselves with the carrier in the background. The photos came back to reveal a periscope feather not our own that hadn't been noticed at the time.

Apparently this story is a year old. Today the PRC denied Kitty Hawk access to Hong Kong for her bi-annual Turkey Day. She and her escorts will be bobbing on China Seas.
