Before anyone gets too upset, I do support the Swift Vets and agree that Kerry is being dishonest. However, I came upon this story in Capitol Hill Blue which says that Mr. O'Neill is a registered Republican. It also lists a number of Republican candidates he has donated to, and provides a link to the website which was used to find out this information.

I would like to know the truth regarding this article.

Chris Matthews made the mistake of asking John O'Neill if he is a republican. In response O'Neill said he hasn't voted for a republican since 1988. He said he voted for Perot twice and Gore.

Since you're asking Jim Rassman who claimed he is a Republican actually registered with the democrat party in January 2004.

When someone writes a book about Mr. O'Neill. Don't get sucked into the left's line of attack ... focus on the message not the messenger ... remember that Mr. O'Neill is not the only person being quoted in the book, there are dozens and dozens of other folks.

One of the problems with the left is that they are VERY willing to lie about THEIR candidate (or other things) to get their way. Of course, they don't call it lying - it's called situational ethics - if I think it, it MUST be true. So of course anyone who isn't one of them is just plain lying. They believe "You are a Republican therefore everything you say is a lie."

I don't think being a Republican makes him any less believable. I guess my question is, if Mr. O'Neill is a Republican, why would he deny it?

The article states that in 1992 he donated $1,000 to George H.W. Bush. Why would he do that and then vote for Perot? I guess it's possible, but it seems strange to me.

Does the article list all the donations he or his law firm or his wife made?

I just did a quick white pages search for John O'Neill in Houston. There appears to be two John O'Neill's in Houston.

People,

This is the straight scoop. The democratic party has dug up all of O'Neill's campaign contributions and registration since 1972. They will try to use it to descredit the SBVTs....and they will try to say that O'Neill lied about how he voted.

I would suggest that you simply shrug it off. Remind the views that who you vote for is no body's business but your own no matter what your party affilation. I would then add that looking for the truth has become a nonpartisan issue for all of us.

If you read "Unfit for Command" you'll also find that unknown to John O'Neill when he was meeting with Nixon in the White House he was recorded saying he and his family were democrats who voted for Hubert Humphrey.A transcript of the conversation exists. As usual democrats can't deal with the message so they look for ways to attack the messenger instead.

How about Chris Matthews. Don't you think he is probably a democrat and don't you think he probably donates to democratic campaigns? How about moveon.org.....I bet those people are democrats and I bet democrats fund them. And thats ok. But if someone from the right side wants to speak out, or take contrabutions from republicans to get their word..thats not OK.

Whether or not John voted Republican is irrelevant. What's relevant is that J. Kerry is a fake, phony and fraud. And, yes, O'Neil admitted today on Salem Radio he voted for H. Humphrey. He even told Nixon he did.

I've been doing a little more digging into this article, and it is deceptive with regards to the CNN Crossfire episode with O'Neill and Carville.

Here is an excerpt from the article.

"O'Neill, first recruited to go after Kerry by the Nixon administration in 1971, said on CNN's Crossfire on August 12 that "I've had no serious involvement in politics of any kind in over 32 years." O'Neill also denied being a Republican."

Mr. O'Neill was not recruited by the Nixon administration. He had a meeting with the Nixon Administration, as well as meetings with Democrats in Congress such as Senator Jackson. The website provides zero evidence for this charge that he was recruited by Nixon to debate Kerry. Mr. O'Neill did it only with the help of a friend who was an enlisted marine.

Furthermore, the website does not include O'Neill's full quote about being involved in politics.

O'NEILL: I've had no serious involvement in politics of any kind in over 32 years. Every Kerry campaign, people have called me, whether they're Democrats or Republicans, to get involved in the campaign. I've always refused. I got involved here because it's commander in chief.

He indicated that by "serious involvement" he meant working with the campaign. This is why the website chose to abbreviate the quote. Sending money to candidates and voting does NOT equate with serious involvement in a campaign - many people in my family do it and I would certainly not say they were seriously involved in politics, and neither would they.

Contrary to what the website says, he did not "deny" being a Republican. He was asked by Bob Novak if he had any connection to the Republican party, and he responded with the above quote. To say he denied being a Republican is false because he did not deny it, and he was not asked if he was a registered republican. You could say he evaded the question of connections, but there is no lie there.

Here is the CNN transcript link for anyone interested.

The key things like with the democrats and liberals is that they only list the contributions by republicans to republicans or to organizations that they claim are republican. They do not list all the contributions that these people make to other than republican causes or charities. Sure, I give money to the Republicans and Republican causes, but that is only about 5% of the total amount of money I give to other causes, individuals and charities.

John O'Neill can vote anyway he wants. He can contribute to anything he wants, as I also do. You either are a truthful and honorable person or you aren't. Being either a republican or a democrat or a catholic or a protestant carries no guaranty of ethical behavior.... [This is a strange topic].

Quick comment on moveon:

MoveOn.org official joins Kerry campaign staffGOP has assailed group for links to the senator
By Sharon Theimer, Associated Press, 4/8/2004

WASHINGTON -- A strategist with MoveOn.org, a group that Republicans accuse of being too closely tied to Democrat John F. Kerry's presidential campaign, is leaving to work for Kerry.

Zack Exley will be the Kerry campaign's director of online communications and organizing. He was the MoveOn political action committee's special projects director, focusing on research and mobilizing MoveOn supporters, Eli Pariser, the PAC's executive director, said yesterday.

President Bush's campaign last week filed a government complaint accusing the Kerry campaign of illegally coordinating political ads and other election spending with MoveOn.org and other pro-Democratic groups. Kerry, MoveOn, and the others named in the complaint deny any wrongdoing.

.... (edited)

To guard against any risk or appearance of improper coordination between MoveOn and the Kerry campaign, steps are being taken to make sure Exley doesn't communicate with anyone at MoveOn until after the November election, Pariser said. Exley's MoveOn laptop was returned to the group as soon as Exley decided to work for Kerry, Pariser said. "He's not bringing any technology or any physical material to the Kerry campaign," Pariser said.
