According to the latest financial reports, Bing is the third largest contributor to Moveon.org, the group that tried to save Clinton from impeachment and is now backing Kerry.
Every four years investigative reporter Brian Ross digs into the influence of corporate money into political campaigns and parties. Democrats and Republicans get skewered as Ross usually features hidden camera video of top politicians rubbing elbows with corporate executives at expensive parties. This year was no exception. But the difference was that Ross, in an ABC News report about the behind-the-scenes activities at the Democratic National Convention, named the Democrats' biggest money man as having mob connections.

Ross focused on Stephen Bing, who "has managed to steer a total of more than $16 million of his money to Democratic candidates and the supposedly independent groups that support them." Bing was described as a "wealthy film producer" but most of his money came from an inheritance from his grandfather, who developed apartment houses in New York. Bing is the heir to a fortune estimated to be from $400 million to $600 million.

Ross reported that, "Democratic Party officials said they knew nothing about the man who law enforcement officials tell ABC News is Bing's friend and business partner—Dominic Montemarano, a New York Mafia figure currently in federal prison on racketeering charges. Montemarano has a long criminal record and is known to organized crime investigators by his street name, Donnie Shacks." Joe Coffey, a former NYPD investigator, told Ross, "Donnie Shacks' main activity was murder. No question about it. That was his main function for the Colombo family and for organized crime in general. He was one of the top hit men in the New York area."

ABC News showed a photo of "Donnie Shacks," Hollywood actress Elizabeth Hurley, and Bing, her ex-boyfriend. Associated Press says that when Hurley announced she was pregnant in November 2001, she named Bing as the father. Bing questioned whether he was the father until he forced a paternity test that proved he was. It is reported he asked Hurley to get an abortion. Bing is now reportedly producing a movie with the title, "Why Men Shouldn't Marry."

Ross said that the Los Angeles Times reported that Bing "paid Montemarano's legal fees after his most recent scrape with the law" and that "Montemarano's lawyer said his client was an employee of Bing's. After a recent private lunch with Democratic vice-presidential candidate Edwards, Bing also declined to answer questions about his relationship with Montemarano."

Why would Bing be meeting with Edwards? A September 3, 2002, Washington Post story said that Steve Bing, a Hollywood producer and top Democratic donor, sent Edwards a $250,000 check. In 2002, Steve Bing's Shangri-La Entertainment gave $905,000 to Edwards's leadership PAC, or political action committee, known as New American Optimists. According to the latest financial reports, Bing is the third largest contributor to Moveon.org, the group that tried to save Clinton from impeachment and is now backing Kerry. Bing has contributed $971,000 to Moveon.org. The two largest contributors to the group are George Soros and Peter Lewis, the leading supporters of drug legalization in the country today.
