It seems clear that Kerry likes to personify others stories. The info on the U.S.S Gridley web site,

http://home.nycap.rr.com/pwcarter/the%20kerry%20page.html

relates where several of the officiers were in Vietnam going to Monkey Mountain (without Kerry) and one of the escorts told a story about the dead VC (after the Tet offensive) being stacked up like cordwood. In Kerry's book he make it out that this was his personel recollection, although at best it was second hand.

If his great Cambodia Stories started after the release of Apocalypse Now is it possible he just personalized the movie?

I believe his first mention of Cambodia was in 1985.

In his own testimony before congress regarding CIA activities in Nicaragua and Iran/Contra. It was there he recalled his "Trips" into Cambodia under Nixon.

This grew into the "Kerry Committee" or Herry Hearings

Here is a highlight of his committee.

Wally 626,

Kerry's first known mention of Cambodia, interestingly is in his movie review of Apacolypse Now for the Boston Herald October 14, 1979.

"On more than one occasion, I like Martin Sheen in "Apocalypse Now," took my patrol boat into Cambodia. In fact I remember spending Christmas Eve of 1968 five miles across the Cambodian border being shot at by our South Vietnamese allies who were drunk and celebrating Christmas. The absurdity of almost being killed by our own allies in a country in which President Nixon claimed there were no American troops was very real."

So lets see Nixon announces the invasion of Cambodia Apr 30, 1970, Kerry testifies to congress Apr 22, 1971. In this major testimony, the one "war crime" he could have personally talked about, the presence of troops illigially in Cambodia in 1968 early 1969 (depending on if you like the Christmas or Jan version of his story) he does not mention. Even though the event was seared into his brain. He only mentions it after seeing Apocalypse Now.

Strange Indeed.
