Kerry, who should have been discharged from the Navy about the same time -- July 1, 1972 -- wasn't given the discharge he has on his campaign Web site until July 13, 1978. What delayed the discharge for six years? This raises serious questions about Kerry's performance while in the reserves that are far more potentially damaging than those raised against Bush."

i'm a civilian, so bear with me, but as I understand it, back then if you missed so many drills in a row during 'active reserve status' (god that sounds weird?) then you automatically got thrown on IRR and sat there as kinda like 'shitlist' secondary draft pool for a while?

there are errors there, but i think because he went IRR, either voluntarily or through missing duty, he had longer before he could be discharged.
