You wouldn't be familiar with a geedunk called mariposa chalet, would you?

Just a guess from your UDT designation and when you served.

Those in the goat locker brag a lot, but the real dirt gets dished in the geedunk and everyone shuts up when the brass comes in. Wink

Can someone help me out? Yeah--I know--probably glad to. Laughing How is 'geedunk' pronounced? Is it with a soft 'g', like in 'gee whiz', or a hard 'g', such as 'gosh?' Want to add the word to my vocabulary, but want to be sure I don't open mouth, insert foot. Embarassed

No problem, glad to improve your lexicon.

It's a hard g. It has dual uses. It can either be used as a place; such as candy store or soda fountain on board larger ships and on bases, or it can also refer to the stuff you buy there. (Swift boats didn't have a geedunk).

First usage: Let's go down to the geedunk and get some poagie bait.

Second usage: Let's go get a bag of geedunk to take to tonights movie.

I'm not going to talk about poagie bait.... (sp?)

Thanks, Jim. I googled 'pogie bait' (this spelling provided by google). The definition was found as part of 'pogue.' I'm not go-i-n-g there! Laughing I'll take it as a piece of candy. Twisted Evil

Quote:
"pogey bait - The Marines in China before WW II were issued candy (Baby Ruths, Tootsie Rolls, etc.) as part of their ration supplements. At the time, sugar and other assorted sweets were rare commodities in China and much in demand by the Chinese, so the troops found the candy useful for barter in town. The Chinese word for prostitute, roughly translated, is 'pogey.' Thus, Marines being Marines, candy became 'Pogey Bait.'"

As unsanitary as this explanation is, it has been sanitized.
