Does anyone know where these files would be stored?

A good place to start would be the Selective Service office in DC. They also have a website http://www.sss.gov/RECORDS2.HTM. I requested my father's record from the 40s and had to include a copy of his death cert. What I got was a copy of an index card-sized form that wasn't terribly helpful, and it took six months to get. Good luck in your search.

Edited to add Selective Service site and delete an opinion on availability.
