More trouble brewing in Ohio: Reader Evan Rogers sent us this absentee ballot from Cuyahoga County (Cleveland). Click to enlarge:
Looking at the ballot, one would assume that to vote for President Bush, you'd punch out the green square opposite the arrow. Nope. The right square for Bush is the red one, number four, near the top of the column. That corresponds, I guess, to the number 4 next to the arrow, and I assume that voters are instructed in what those numbers mean. What makes it unreasonable is that to vote for John Kerry, you punch square six, the blue one, which is just opposite Kerry's arrow. So Bush voters are likely to be confused; Kerry voters won't be.
There are probably dozens, if not hundreds, of such sources of confusion in various districts around the country. Depending on the election's outcome, any of them could be grounds for post-election lawsuits.

Cuyahoga County, Cleveland in particular, is heavily Democrat. Let's hope the non-Democrat voters can figure this mess out. |

Just saw this on Powerline, too angry for words. Maybe this is part of the plot to kill off Republicans with blood pressure problems.

It had to be the Democrats monkeying with the ballots.
Has anyone besides me ever wondered why it is usually democrats that are entrenched in the election process mechanics? You know, manning the polling places, election boards, printing the ballots, and keeping the election records current.
I live in Buffalo, NY, in the heart of Liberal Democrat country.
15 years ago I decided to switch party affiliations and become a registered Republican.
I filled out a voter registration change card every year for 12 years without successfully getting a change in my status. It wasn't until 3 years ago I finally hand delivered my voter registration card change to the local head of the Republican Party that my status finally got changed. He walked my card though the system and today I am a Republican.
This system in New York is so corrupt it isn't funny. I fully expect a Kerry landslide where I live. My only consolidation is in annoying the Kerry supporters and the local Liberals. |

I have a friend who lives in a liberal area in Indiana .This friend's brother moved to Florida about 1990. My friend bought his brother's house and every election he still gets a notification of where his brother's voting precent is. Even though he has not lived in Indiana for 14 years. |

I am voting in Huron County Ohio with a punch card like that in past elections. How are we supposed to know to punch out a place where there is no arrow?
Wait, the numbers on the punch cards we use to vote are not visible at all when we vote because the card is inside a holder. There are little punch hole guides down the center. The arrows point to the hole we chose to punch out.
The voter has to be able to read which side it up, which is clearly marked on the card, and how to insert the ballot into the holder. The ballot then must fit over two points that stick up and hold the ballot in place while being punched. The one pictured looks like it could be upside down. Or perhaps it was printed upside down.
I think this is a spoof. I have read a lot of things posted here which are just people passing on information which may or may not have any truth to it.

No spoof - if you check the update on Powerline Blog, it's been explained that this confusion will most likely come about with absentee ballots - absentee voters are told to punch out the chad that corresponds with the numbers, but they are not told specifically to disregard the arrows.
Apparently the ballot works with the non-absentee voter form. No pictures available for that lineup.
One other thing that ticks me off on this ballot - why is the President's name not in the top box? Last I heard, the President of the United States outranks a Senator and a bunch of other wannabe's. _________________ ~ Echo Juliet ~

The article at powerlineblog says that AP is all over this.
It also says
Quote: | The AP article says that John Kerry's arrow could also be misaligned, depending on the order in which the names appear on the ballot. |
That's nonsense. The names ARE in alphabetical order. However the top two names have been cut off and pasted below the others. The numbers and arrows would line up if the names were put back in place. This is probably a mistake from all the confusion caused by the courts, and the courts need to deal with this. They can't tie up the process and then walk away from it. _________________ -I'm Jim, and I approve what I write, unless it's wrong.

How come the one for Bush says 4 but it is clearly pointing at 14? |

Because this is an absentee ballot's listing.
It's different than the listing that will be used in the butterfly machine in the polling booth.
The absentee ballot, however, includes instructions to vote in the matching square but does NOT specify that the voter is not to try to match up arrows or put the ballot alongside the listing to vote.
COINCIDENTALLY, of course, the only candidates whose names match up with their correct numbers as most of the absentee voters intuitively line up the listing with the ballot are KERRY and BADNARIK. _________________ ~ Echo Juliet ~
