Let the tears fall
Daddy, Can you hear me? It was glorious...
You who always envisioned Americas greatness.
Her people starting to come together.
Patriotism starting to flow.
Soldier of the civilian sector...
Fighting not other soldiers.
Fighting instead fire and smoke,
Holding small children broken in your arms.
Fighting death right at his door.
Washing them clean with cool water.
I could hear you years past
As I listened to the chatter on the waves,
How angry and excited you would get.
How thoughtful in defeat, but full of hope.
Daddy you should have seen it...
A group of men with history.
I know how you love history.
They fought the same war as Uncle Richard.
They came flying in like eagles at sunset.
Tearing at the ribbons of lies with talons.
Their shrieks echoed off the mountains,
Full of rightous indignation,
Vibrating with the fervor I've seen in you.
Never to be defeated they swooped.
And though I felt fear in my heart.
I could never see it in theirs.
Truly heros of our dear people.
Oh Daddy I wish you were here today.
Vibrant, eyes sparkling with challenge.
Glistening with pride in America.
Instead its my eyes that are shiny,
My heart eased, my fear gone.
Finally I can lay the banner down,
And let the tears of relief fall.
Tears of hope, tears of pride,
Tears that I know you would cry...
If you could.

I felt the lump in my throat when I read the first line of that poem and tears were falling by line 2. _________________ Deborah

The tears did fall. How could you read this and not shed a tear.

Thank you for the kind words...
I wrote that after I let myself cry it all out when Kerry conceded. I didn't realize how much I had emotionally invested in this election until it was over.
My father was the same way, though he was much stronger.
Much love and gratitude to all,

I'm crying right along with you. My father died over a year ago, just days before the first bomb fell on Baghdad. My husband died five years ago. Both were staunch military men, and I know exactly where they would have stood on the issue of John Kerry.
May you have peace, now that the crisis is at least averted. _________________ Joanne
