From yesterday's Miami Herald "Letters" section, these balanced (cough cough) offerings. I am at a loss as to whether the section editor is refering to the following letters or their collective targets as "lame reasoning" (not really tho) . Here's an opportunity for rebuttal for those who might wish to keep a fine edge on their "letters to the editor" electronic quills...
Quote: | Lame reasoning on Bush's victory
It was troubling to read law Professor Jan Ting's Jan. 10 analysis in the Other Views column Why Bush won. Ting credits President Bush's victory to the votes of centrists and moderates who could have gone for either candidate. Citing his own decision as an example, he explains that what finally closed the deal was his revulsion for the ridiculous attacks on Bush by the political left.
I would imagine that a law professor of a distinguished university would base his decision in picking the next leader of our country on more than a few slogans and bumper stickers.
Ting presents us with proof of the president's intelligence by pointing to the hiring of his talented advisor Karl Rove. Although Rove's hiring has turned out to be brilliant, one should also consider whether his masterful mass manipulation was good for the country or just for the person he serves.
Should Ting really be considered a centrist when he isn't as repulsed by the vicious attacks on Sen. John Kerry by Rove and other Republicans? Should he have us ignore the Swift Boat Vets fiasco? Ting's decision in voting for Bush was also based on quotes by Sen. Zell Miller and an aversion to name-calling -- all while ignoring facts such as the faulty evidence to justify launching a war that is costing thousands of lives and tax dollars; the revengeful White House act resulting in the outing of a CIA agent; the concealment of the true cost of the Medicare bill to assure its passing, etc.
It is ironic that there are those like Ting still trying to justify their vote for Bush by blaming it solely on extreme calumnies by the American left.
LOTTIE M. GARCIA, Miami
Ting would have been well-served (if not self-served) by checking the exit polls, which revealed that it was Kerry who enjoyed a comfortable margin among self-described moderates.
Ting theorizes that, in the end, moderates chose not to associate with the likes of Michael Moore, Ted Kennedy and those who mocked the president by putting inflammatory bumper sickers on their cars. But it sounds suspiciously to me like this ''moderate Republican'' is seeking merely to rationalize his own association with the likes of Jerry Falwell, Tom DeLay and those who mocked a decorated veteran by putting purple-heart Band-Aids on their faces.
HOWARD CAMERIK, Weston
What a relief to know that the American people elected Bush not because we approved of his disastrous policies but because our sensibilities were offended by the perceived attacks against him. Thank heaven that it was our emotions that dictated our choice and not that our intellect, cognitive thinking and reasoning powers completely failed us on Election Day.
Had the electorate truly been inclined to castigate a negative campaign, they would have turned from Bush in droves after the vicious Swift Boat attacks, which used smears, lies and the vendetta of a few bitter men to impugn a war hero and, in so doing, cast aspersions on all decorated war veterans. ''Name-calling and ridiculing'' as stated by Ting have been elevated to an art form by Rove and the Republican publicity machine.

EMAIL I sent to the "A HOLE"
Please read the 1971 Kerry Senate Testimony from the perspective of the enemy holding American POW’s captive.
Please go ahead make my day and find one untruth that the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth spoke during the election. There is no rebuttal and Kerry knew better then anyone these honorable men were speaking the truth and his only hope was that willing accomplices like you would slander the Swift Boat Veteran’s and POW’s for Truth . I hope the Swift Boat Veteran’s and POW’s for Truth sue you and the others like you for slander.
Kerry’s testimony was not only accepted as fact by the enemy but also by the American news media. And not only were hundreds of POW’s tortured by Kerry’s lies millions of Vietnam Veterans were tortured by America as there honor was stolen. And the honor of 58,000 who did not come home was also stolen by John Kerry. Not to mention the hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese who were murdered when the United States lost its political will to fight and left prematurely. And let’s not forget the millions of boat people who had to flee for their lives and re establish their lives in new strange lands.

Obviously, these people get their news from ABC, CBS, and NBC, or
maybe from the NYT or the DNC. They are spouting the mantra that
most uninformed, lazy people accept as truth instead of taking the
time to research the facts for themselves. _________________ Susan R. Morton |

We still don't know what the "plan" was. _________________ A willing tool of the "Vast Right Wing Conspiracy" since 1981. |
