The anti Uniformed American public opinion was well established before Carter came to power in 1976. However I do believe that it was with the Regan administration that public opinion started to shift towards the troops and more important the opinion the troops had of themselves. But it wasn't until the success of Gulf War One that America rallied in support of the troops. I remember the day well in March of 1991 when our military in all its glory liberated Kuwait. Yes America is back and our troops have never looked better. It was though a heavy weight was lifted off my shoulders that day.

Joe McCarthy turned out to pretty much have been correct in his theories and allegations, whether one wants to discuss how it went along in the proceedings is another thing. Alger Hiss was a Soviet spy and the Libs even now can't accept it after the KGB records show he was. They also have a never ending hatred for Richard Nixon for proving it.

and for Reagan's successful 'We Win, They Lose' approach to the communists.

I just had to take some editorial license Cool to emphasize you're spot on in your analysis. The McCarthy Hearings records are all there for the viewing, and no matter the Dem's spin of the introduction material, for anyone who reads them cover to cover, only one conclusion can be drawn...McCarthy was correct in his accusations. Another successful dodge by the LameStream Media in ignoring the facts when they were declassified! (course, it didn't fit their agenda very well Cool )

What is sad that by the mid 70's the hitch hiking long hairs were made out to be heroes while those who wore the uniform and continued to wear the uniform were mocked?

My local Gannet rag the Sheboygan Press called. I sent the letter that began this thread to them and apparently they are going to publish it.

The first generation spawn of "liberalized" education hit the streets. McCarthy was looking at government and the arts and he, apparently, overlooked the education establishment.

MTB and CWV,

you're both spot on, but Me#1 is on to something...In 1965, I returned home after my first year at PSU...thought I was just about the smartest thing on the planet. A 7th grade neighbor of mine came up to me and asked for some 'math tutoring' help during the summer. Of course, since I was the smartest kid in the state I said no problem! later that week we got started. His math book had unions, junctions, sets, and other functions, but WHERE WAS THE MATH?????????? I firmly believe that it was at that point we lost a whole generation (or 2 now, what with today's math books covering nothing but PC). While it saved my summer for me (I went and had a good time after my summer job rather than tutoring), but even back then I could somehow see this black cloud looming on the horizon.

Will the last engineer please turn out the lights!Cool

As a young child I struggled with reading. In 3rd grade (1966) the educrats determined I did not spend enough time crawling. So they enrolled me in summer school. They had me crawling across the gymnasium floor for about an hour every day. By the time I got home from crawling school the days line ups for the neighborhood daily baseball games where already set. What I needed was phonics and baseball not remedial crawling. From that summer on I developed a rebellion against all teachers.
