Patriotic Bikers Battle Anti-Gay Protesters
Wearing vests covered in military patches, a band of motorcyclists rolls around the country from one soldier's funeral to another, cheering respectfully to overshadow jeers from church protesters.
They call themselves the Patriot Guard Riders, and they are more than 5,000 strong, forming to counter anti-gay protests held by the Rev. Fred Phelps at military funerals.
Phelps believes American deaths in Iraq are divine punishment for a country that he says harbors homosexuals. His protesters carry signs thanking God for so-called IEDs — explosives that are a major killer of soldiers in Iraq.
The bikers shield the families of dead soldiers from the protesters, and overshadow the jeers with patriotic chants and a sea of red, white and blue flags.

They (the Patriot Guard) now have the law on their side, at least in Indiana. Governor Daniels signed the law banning funeral protests within 500 feet almost the second he got it (It apparently never touched his desk, he signed it that quickly). Thank goodness, those ******** were apparently going to show up in Kokomo for the funeral of a fallen Army Sergeant on Monday. |

A similar law was fast tracked through the OK legislature and was signed - there are two military funerals this week.
I heard one story on the radio that the state will be prepared to arrest these protesters if they try anything - they even plan to have Human Services people available since the protest group brings their children to these funerals. |

Those ******** can still show up at the funeral on Monday -"Disorderly conduct" within 500 feet from a funeral is a felony in Indiana...It doesn't take effect until July 1st, 2006.
Plus, in the bill (and please correct me if I am wrong), but it seems Indian's definition of "disorderly conduct" still leaves it wide open for the ******** to show up with their hateful signs at these soldiers funerals, and apparently, it's okay for them to be closer than 500 feet as long as they are "quiet" and don't "get in the way"!
