Eighteen months before Iowa holds its presidential caucuses, a former vice presidential candidate is up and a favorite son is down.
A poll conducted for The Des Moines Register showed Democrat John Edwards, the former North Carolina senator and 2004 vice presidential nominee, favored by 30 percent. New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton garnered 26 percent and Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts, the party's 2004 presidential nominee, was at 12 percent.
Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack faired poorly in his own state when matched against other potential Democratic presidential candidates, drawing support from only 10 percent.
Edwards wrapped up two days of campaigning and fundraising for Democratic candidates on Monday, his fifth trip to the state this year. He welcomed the news of the poll on Sunday.
"All I have to say is we like Iowa and Elizabeth and I obviously have a lot of friends here," Edwards said.
Jeff Link, a veteran Iowa strategist consulting with Vilsack's political action committee, argued that the showing wasn't unexpected because Vilsack has taken few overt steps toward actually running.
"I don't think many Iowans think Tom Vilsack is running for president," Link said.
The Selzer & Co. poll surveyed 399 likely Democratic caucus participants and had a margin of error of 4.9 percent.

IMHO, it's way, way too early to even consider polling like this to be meaningful. Whose got all that money to spend on all these polls? It's getting crazy... |
