The Great American Country channel will air a documentary on the video Big and Rich did on a battle in War Zone D in 1965 involving the 173rd Airborne. The song and video were inspired by one of the survivors of that battle in which 48 Sky Soldiers died. Another of the survivors was a medic who was the first black soldier since the Spanish American War to receive a Medal of Honor without having to die in action. The documentary will appear at 8:00 P.M. EST. 7:00 CST.

OK jalexson,

for those of us video challenged types...is that the CMT (country and music channel) or do we have to have Dish/Satellite TV to enjoy this treat...any other links??? I did see Big and Rich the other day on some other channel but missed the intro and what it was that they were pushing at the time.

Be a good change of pace for the Red White and Blue missing in this Blue Day!

Cox offers the channel as part of its digital package. I don't know about other services. I believe the channel has the same owner as CMT. It's going to be reshown today (Saturday, Nov. 11) and Sunday.

Saturday and Sunday (Nov. 11 and 12) the Great American Country channel will air a documentary on the video by Big and Rich that chronicles a battle fought on this date 41 years ago in War Zone D in Vietnam on November 8, 1965. Sky Soldiers of the 173rd Airborne lost 48 men fighting a combined Viet Cong and North Vietnamese force of 1,200. The documentary features one of the survivors, Niles Harris, who inspired the video and song. Harris was one of the first members of Company C to be hit.

(Times are EST)Saturday: 2:00 P.M. 9:00 P.M.
Sunday: 1:00 A.M., 9:00 A.M.

The channel also is advertising a special program this friday for Veterans Day hosted by Big and Rich.
Saturday: 12:00 P.M. 8:00 P.M.
Sunday: 12:00 A.M., 8:00 A.M.

Sp6 Lawrence Joel, a medic, became the first living black man to receive a Medal of Honor since the Spanish American War. He continued to treat the wounded in spite of being seriously wounded himself. The documentary includes a video of President Johnson presenting him with the MOH.

The documentary tells the story of how Harris inspired Big and Rich to write the song while they were performing at the bar where he worked. They accompany him to Vietnam to the site of the battle where they did a hole in a B-52 crater so that he can bury the boots that were sent to Valley Forge Hospital from Vietnam with him.
