Perhaps it's wishful thinking and I may well be wrong, but my bet is that Pelosi drops Murtha like yesterday's news and that this "endorsement" is the cover she needs before she pulls the rug out from under his feet...all in the interest of caucus unity mind you. If the endorsement numbers that Hoyer claims to control are valid, this is going to become a battle royal. Hoyer wants it, and he wants it BAD...and there's already lefty blog talk about Murtha's "ethics" vulnerabilities. I don't think we need be puzzled about the source for that.

Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), in line to become Speaker in January, is throwing her support to Rep. John Murtha (D-Pa.) in the race for Majority Leader, a move that will be an early test of her influence and will weigh heavily on Murtha's contest with Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) for the post.
Pelosi, in a letter distributed Sunday to newly elected House Democrats, wrote that Murtha's outspoken opposition to the war in Iraq helped change the electoral campaign for the House this fall. Murtha began calling for a U.S. pullout from Iraq a year ago, and his open opposition to the war made him a focus of intense criticism from Republicans and the White House.
Pelosi, though, credited Murtha, one of her closest allies in the House, with changing the national debate on the issue and helping provide Democratic challengers and incumbents with a winning argument for the mid-term elections.
"With respect to Iraq in particular, I salute your courageous leadership that changed the national debate and helped make Iraq the central issue of this historic election," Pelosi wrote in a personal letter to Murtha. "Your leadership gave so many Americans, including respected military leaders, the encouragement to voice their own disapproval at a failed policy that weakens our military and makes stability in that region even more difficult to achieve. The enthusiastic response of Americans all across this nation gave an enormous lift to our Democratic efforts, and your unsurpassed personal solicitations produced millions of dollars which were new to the effort. Those resources made a huge difference and particularly for the candidates on whose behalf you campaigned."
Pelosi added: "Your strong voice for national security, the war on terror and Iraq provides genuine leadership for our party, and I count on you to continue to lead on these vital issues. For this and for all you have done for Democrats in the past and especially this last year, I am pleased to support your candidacy for Majority Leader for the 110th Congress."
Hoyer released his own letter on Friday signed by 21 of the 41 incoming Democrats, and his backers claimed that at least another five new Members would support his candidacy for Majority Leader, giving Hoyer claim to a huge block of votes.
"Nancy told me some time ago that she would personally support Jack," Hoyer said in a staement. "I respect her decision as the two are very close.
"I am grateful for the support I have from my colleagues, and have the majority of the caucus supporting me. I look forward to working with Speaker Pelosi as Majority Leader."
But Pelosi's action is sure to shake up the race between Hoyer and Murtha, and is also a signal to the Bush administration and GOP Congressional leaders that she will take an aggressive line on Iraq.
Pelosi, with critical support from Murtha, defeated Hoyer in a race for Minority Whip in 2001, and sources close to the California Democrat said she wants to reward Murtha for his loyalty by backing him in the Majority Leader race.

For all Pelosi's decrying of Republicans as "the party of corruption" for months and months, she sure is making shaky appointments to leadership positions.
Pelosi backing Murtha of Abscam fame. (Caught on tape, no less.)
-Murtha who has been one of the biggest promoters of 'pork and earmarks' said to be one of the most powerful members in Congress as head of the Armed Services Appropriations Committee, wheeling and dealing the pork--big defense contracts to congressman in return for their votes. And his taking huge campaign contributions from large Corporations in competition for defense contracts. (Conflict of interest, anyone?)
And Pelosi backing Alcee Hastings over Jane Harmon for Intelligence Committee.
-Alcee Hastings who is a former Judge convicted and impeached for taking bribes.
Sheesh, really steering clear of any taint of corruption, eh Nancy??
While you're at it, might as well restore the Hon. William Jefferson to the Ways and Means Committee. _________________ “I love the man that can smile in trouble, that can gather strength from distress, and grow brave by reflection. ‘Tis the business of little minds to shrink; but he whose heart is firm, and whose conscience approves his conduct, will pursue his principles unto death.” (Thomas Paine, 1776) |

Well, it's hitting the fan now. This "story" didn't get much play when democratic military heroes were the MSM order of the day.
I don't see how Murtha and his aspirations survive this...and there's plenty of room under that bus next to Rummy.

CREW Blasts Pelosi Endorsement of Unethical Murtha for Majority Leader
Washington, DC - Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) questioned soon-to-be House Speaker Nancy Pelosi?s (D-CA) commitment to eradicating corruption with her endorsement of one of the most unethical members in Congress, Rep. John Murtha (D-PA), to be Majority Leader of the House of Representatives.
Rep. Murtha was listed in CREW? report Beyond DeLay: The 20 Most Corrupt Members of Congress (and five to watch). As reported in the study and by the news media, Rep, Murtha has been involved in a number of pay-to play schemes involving former staffers and his brother, Robert "Kit" Murtha.

Has the Dem crackup begun? I think I am starting to pull for Murtha. He is checkmated on Iraq by Lieberman and if Soros hates him then he could just as well serve out his "useful idiot" term being a thorn in the side of the lefties.
How does one refrain form enjoying seeing them eat their own? |

While I understand your point, let's look a bit more long-term. If Soros et al want Hoyer in (I just saw ultra-lefty Jim McDermott touting Hoyer on Hardball), so do I. Not only will I relish the thought of Murtha getting his, I want them to have all the rope they need to hang themselves in '08. |

In a very real way the Dems are in a lose/lose situation. They can not govern as liberal as they are or they are doomed in 08. On the other hand they have an entire constituency expecting them to turn us into a socialist republic. Oh my! Governing is tough when you have no principles aint it? The GOP got spanked for forgetting theirs, the Dems may be about be beheaded for not having any in the first place.
There is value in seeing them go full left and it would be sweet justice to see Murtha get his for his betrayal. He must feel like a used date the morning after. |

Homesteader, very good observations. But I think we're all forgetting one thing. Truth doesn't matter. If there is any way to make a sow's ear into a silk purse, MSM will gladly do it. What will be interesting is to observe how they do it, and just which faction of the left MSM comes down for. In fact, if MSM can be drawn into the fight, and thereby split from a solid unity, we just might have a chance of the truth getting out. |

A-K,
I have a relative who is much like the MSM. This person has a very critical spirit and a tongue to match. This person enters a situation and sets off a verbal IED causing lots of blast damage to everyone, leaving behind hurt, confusion and resentment. Only hours later this person will act like nothing happened and that the words that caused so much pain were never said. There absolutely no sense of accountability or responsibility. The truth is what this person determines it to be at the moment.
Thus, the MSM can hold up people like Murtha as heros one day and only hours later label him as ethically deficient. |

Meet the New Boss
John Murtha and Congress's "culture of corruption."
Wednesday, November 15, 2006 12:01 a.m. EST
House Speaker-designate Nancy Pelosi's endorsement of Rep. John Murtha for majority leader, the No. 2 position in the Democratic leaderhsip, has roiled her caucus. "She will ensure that they [Mr. Murtha and his allies] win. This is hardball politics," Rep. Jim Moran, a top Murtha ally, told the Hill, a congressional newspaper. "We are entering an era where when the speaker instructs you what to do, you do it."
But several members are privately aghast that Mr. Murtha, a pork-barreling opponent of most House ethics reforms, could become the second most visible symbol of the new Democratic rule. "We are supposed to change business as usual, not put the fox in charge of the henhouse," one Democratic member told me. "It's not just the Abscam scandal of the 1980s that he barely dodged, he's a disaster waiting to happen because of his current behavior," another told me.
SNIP
Melanie Sloan, the liberal head of Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, was cheered on by Democrats six weeks ago when she helped reveal the Mark Foley scandal. Now she says that "Ms. Pelosi"s endorsement of Rep. Murtha, one of the most unethical members of Congress, show that she may have prioritized ethics reform merely to win votes with no real commitment to changing the culture of corruption." _________________ "If he believes his 1971 indictment of his country and his fellow veterans was true, then he couldn't possibly be proud of his Vietnam service." |
