I'm not feeling great today. In fact I'm feeling downright mean and uncharitable. The following I didn't need.
I was just getting into Coulter's column when I got hit over the head by an editing 2 X 4:
Quote: | Now that they've won their elections and don't have to deal with the hicks anymore, Tester can cut lose the infernal buzz cut... |
That was the frosting on today's unbearable cake and explains to me why we Americans just gave away the country store.
We have truly become a nation of illiterate, uneducated dolts.
When a friggin' EDITOR for ANNE FRIGGIN' COULTER can't differentiate between "LOSE" and "LOOSE", we, as a society, have crossed the educational Rubicon into realms of stupidity that I thought not possible.
Do me a favor all. For at least the next several days, if you are unable to distinguish between "lose" and "loose", don't use them in your text. Wipe them from your vocabulary. Remove the letters "L", "O", "S", and "E" from your keyboards so you won't be tempted to try.
My sanity is at stake here, and another demonstration of American stupidity will be more than I can bear. |

me# - sort of glad to hear you weren't / aren't doing so well...and feeling uncharitable etc....
makes me feel better that I've felt the same way...even yelled at my doG last night... and have spent hours since apologizing to her....
I could hardly sleep last night... promised myself I'd NEVER vote again etc etc...
anyway... I had to read that line about 3 times.... just couldn't figure it out with the 'lose' in it ! lol! so, I gave up and finished your post...
then I knew why I couldn't understand it - wrong word!
I see people (supposedly w/ college educations) on my other board screw up those 2 words ALL the time...drives me nuts! _________________ Stevie

They sure don't teach much spelling and grammer in school anymore do they?
We have high school kids working at our local weekly newspaper and it's almost unreadable with errors.
Of course, it's good for me that the newest version of Firefox has an automatic 'as you type' spell checker built in.
Anyhow, your post brought a glimmer of humor into an otherwise dark day so thanks for the pick-me-up.

Not to distract from mood swings but I read that on first glance as a composition mistake and not a spelling mistake. When composing direct to screen I frequently do the same, consider a synonym and end up with both.
e.g.
Tester can cut the infernal buzz cut
Tester can lose the infernal buzz cut
Both make more sense to me than "cutting loose" something that may not want to find a new home.
Not knowing "Tester" or his "buzz cut", I may have got the wrong end of the stick here, but you can cut me some slack if you think I'm losing the plot somewhat. |

What am I missing here????
Coulter absolutely used the correct verb.
Loose lips sink ships.
Lose the haircut.
Do you think she meant to tell Tester to loosen up?
No, she's right, you are wrong.
Either that, or I am banned for life. Which is it???? _________________ Former "War Criminal" |

OK, twelve seconds and I apologize profusely.
That word "cut" was hiding in the shadow of that big "lose."
Mea culpa, mea culpa, etc..
"As a combat veteran.... I apologize."
Sorry, Me#1You#10, for that last flippant line. That's just how we apologize in Massachusetts.
I'm going out for coffee. Dunkin's Donuts at that. No Starbucks for this war criminal. _________________ Former "War Criminal" |

As 1991932 can attest, I have a loose buzz cut.
But I'm not going to lose it, as I barely have enough hair up there to cover the hole in my head that Betty S. gave me when I was 12 years old.
Her brother and I called her a name and she promptly hit me on the head with a well-thrown rock, that blocked out the sun on its laser trajectory towards my crew cut dome...but that's another story
As far as buzz cuts, crew cuts, and bald heads, those are the hair styles of choice in Montana. What with the wind and bitter temperatures, those are the only hair cuts we can keep in place beneath all of those hoods and caps we have to wear to keep our heads warm.
Somewhat seriously now, John Tester made a great deal out of his Montana crew cut during the election. Considering just how narrowly he won the Senate nod in Montana, I'd say he won by a crew cut hair

I normally don't mind what Ann Coulter says, but if you added "virulent" to that description, it'd fit her to a "T". The angry tone of her opinions doesn't do anyone, and especially Republicans, any good.
She really should loose all that anger eh?

I just left here and went to the Pacific War forum.
Fortunately the porn merchants haven't found the Swift Vets and POWs forum, or maybe they have but (or butt) haven't been able to bust through.
This hopefully short-lived post was the first thing I saw over there.

For the sake of your sanity, stay away from California. We're the reason you see Braille on drive-up ATMs.
This pervasive stupidity is sometimes funny, though. I love it when a newspaper "editor" decides you can hyphenate the word "sources", as in "...sour-
ces said."
No wonder those sour-ces have such a bitter tone.
The funniest headline I ever saw was two lines, four words:
Cops Shoot
Dead Driver
He must have been holding up traffic or something. Now I know why the evening commute is so slow. It's because of all those dead people doing 45 in the fast lane. _________________ DLI 78

Perhaps you were just ahead of the crowd:

Has anyone else noticed how prolific the mispelling of the word 'lose' seems to have become? Invariably "loose" is incorrectly substituted.
It seems to be everywhere I look these days. |
Interestingly enough, many comments in the thread are complaining about U.S. linguistic constructs taking over in U.K. mainstream discourse. |
