Barbara Boxer, Code Pink's favorite Senator
Scott Swett

In the final days of her most difficult reelection bid, California Senator Barbara Boxer is emphasizing veterans issues to deflect criticism of her long history of undermining the US military, a cynical strategy that has garnered an endorsement from the increasingly leftist VFW. At the recent opening of a new veterans' center in Pasadena, Boxer was overcome with emotion as Senator Inouye of Hawaii defended her record of support for veterans and veterans' issues.

Let's review a few facts that Boxer and her handlers hope the voters won't recall.

In Congress during the Cold War, Boxer consistently worked to cut military funding for projects such as the Patriot missile and stealth aircraft, and supported a Congressional Black Caucus recommendation to cut the defense budget in half. In 1991, she sponsored a House resolution demanding prior Congressional approval of all covert US actions overseas - a measure that would have crippled anti-terrorist efforts. The radical proposal was defeated unanimously.

As a US Senator, Boxer voted against health care reconciliation bill amendments to exempt veterans from a new tax on medical devices, including prosthetics such as artificial limbs.

Perhaps the most revealing window into Boxer's true feelings towards our military is her close alliance with Code Pink, a radical leftist group that reviles American troops as terrorists and assassins while praising their enemies as freedom fighters. For years, Code Pink has viciously harassed wounded veterans and their families outside Walter Reed Hospital, even telling the mother of a slain Navy Seal that her son "deserved to die." Code Pink actively supports terror groups such as Hamas, the Muslim Brotherhood, the Taliban, Hezbollah and al Qaeda.

The Code Pink website repeatedly praises "our beloved Barbara Boxer." And why not? Boxer has worked with the group and supported its goals on many occasions. In early 2005, Boxer was the only member of the Senate to oppose certifying the Electoral College result that returned George Bush to office for a second term. Code Pink hosted rallies and participated in various demonstrations and marches to "defend democracy" against the results of the 2004 elections. They wrapped up the event at Senator Boxer's California office, "singing her songs of thanks."

Code Pink's leaders had just returned from Fallujah, Iraq, where 51 Americans had been killed and 560 wounded in the US Marines' heaviest urban combat since the Vietnam War. Code Pink delivered $600,000 in cash and supplies to the very insurgents the Marines had been fighting against - quite literally giving aid and comfort to America's enemies in a time of war. As noted in Islam Online (removed from the site -- it is revealing that Islam Online seems willing to delete articles to protect a leftist American politician -- but cached here), a diplomatic courtesy letter from Barbara Boxer helped make the trip possible.

In early 2006, Code Pink cheered as Boxer became one of only three Senators to support a resolution to censure President Bush for wiretapping US citizens; specifically, citizens who were communicating with terrorist organizations overseas. Citizens like the members of Code Pink.

It's something to keep in mind when you see Barbara Boxer weeping over American veterans.

Here’s an interesting update: shortly after “Barbara Boxer, Code Pink’s favorite Senator” was posted at American Thinker, Islam Online deleted its article reporting that Boxer had signed a diplomatic letter to enable Code Pink’s 2004 Fallujah trip.

Amazing what Islamic radicals will do to protect their US allies. Fortunately, the cached article is still available here:

I've been stewing ever since I first learned of the outrageous endorsements of the VFW PAC, so tonight, armed with Scott's column, I wrote the following email to the leadership of the VFW...and copied and pasted in Scott's column.

Quote:
The Honorable:

Gentlemen,

I join with the millions of military veterans and their families who are shocked, disappointed, and outraged by the VFW PAC endorsement of candidates for public office who have demonstrated contempt for the military and for military veterans. On the battlefield, we never "sided with the enemy" just because they happened to be in power at the time. We continued to fight them and DEFEAT them, not make a pact of convenience with them, but that is EXACTLY what your PAC has done; trying to ingratiate itself with incumbents who will turn on veterans AGAIN just as soon as they are reelected. Your PAC has disgraced and defamed the VFW and its millions of members by confusing and misleading an electorate at a critical time in our history into believing that U.S. military veterans of foreign wars endorse these scoundrels. My son-in-law will be deploying soon for his FIFTH tour in either Afghanistan or Iraq -- he has been to both Hell holes -- NOT to achieve victory but to satisfy the whims of politicians who are without vision or courage or honor. The candidates endorsed by the VFW PAC would be happy if he never returned, and their cuts to military appropriations legislation and addition of non-related riders to divert more funds from the military and into their own reelection pet projects is proof. They couldn't even pass a BUDGET this year before they raced home to campaign.

To add further insult, given the choice to endorse candidates who would work hard for veterans' rights vs. incumbents with proven anti-military records, the VFW PAC failed to endorse any opposition candidates who were either military veterans with strong pro-veteran-interest credentials or who had publicly promised to make veterans' issues a top priority and chose instead to endorse the more military-unfriendly incumbents, virtually all being Liberal Democrats. Even in head-to-head races between such clear choices, the VFW PAC chose the incumbent anti-military candidates. Arguably the most egregious endorsement is that of Senator "General, Don't Call me M'am, Call me Senator" Barbara Boxer of California. Perhaps a bit of research might have persuaded the PAC to reconsider endorsing her. I offer the following below.

With profound disgust for your PAC and with hopes the leadership of the VFW will correct this travesty immediately by publicly denouncing the endorsements,

Bruce Obermeyer

Message received, apparently LOUD and CLEAR (emphasis mine)...

VFW Leaders Act on PAC Endorsements
October 12, 2010

Comrades,

The angry tone and tenor of the telephone calls and messages being received at national headquarters make it clear that many of our members are not cognizant of the fact that VFW National By-Laws clearly stipulate that the VFW Commander-in-Chief is not authorized to direct or otherwise attempt to introduce his control over the VFW PAC. Furthermore, no membership dues or donations made to the VFW or VFW Foundation are used for the VFW PAC.

As you know, the recent endorsements by the PAC are the subject of much controversy. Unfortunately, many questions have been raised regarding VFW’s involvement in the endorsement process and the integrity of the organization as a whole. Regrettably, many of our members and supporters are disappointed and have misdirected their anger toward the VFW as having lost its purpose.

Comrades, we cannot sit idly by while a great organization is being disparaged and maligned, even unintentionally. It is vitally important that you take a direct role in alleviating this current flood of criticism by reminding members and supporters that:

-- The VFW PAC was created by the VFW members and not by VFW national leaders. 2/3 of the delegates of the 80th VFW National Convention (1979) voted to establish PAC as a standing committee.

-- VFW By-Laws stipulate that VFW leadership does not direct PAC activities and that the VFW convention is the governing body of the organization. As such, it is only the delegates at the convention that can determine the continuation of the PAC.

-- Encourage VFW members to get involved in their VFW Posts and to exercise and further direct their concerns to convention delegates so that there can be an informed debate on the existence of the PAC.

That is a future process. But, as indicated, we also have an immediate necessity on the recent PAC endorsements. VFW’s values and guiding principles aren’t grounded in a desire to participate in partisan policies in political activities. As veterans of foreign wars, we gave substantially more of ourselves than most to ensure the viability and the integrity of our great democratic process. However, our recent endorsement process unintentionally provided favoritism to the incumbents. It is now evident it was unfairly skewed and actually subverted that process.

As determined in the VFW By-Laws, as the national officers, we have specific responsibilities to take definitive action when events can have a detrimental impact on the organization. It is clear to us that the current situation now demands direct action; therefore, we are requesting the chairman and the directors of the Political Action Committee immediately rescind their endorsement actions.

We also want to stress this request means no endorsement for any Congressional candidate.

Why did it take a notice from TEWS to get the organization to react, when it was a blatant endorsement of an anti-American politician to start with? IOW, "Now that we have been caught with our pants down, we won't make any more political endorsements".

Zinfella, while I just got wind of this, the online veteran community was on it pretty quickly...and "Blackfive" had another piece up at Breitbart's "Big Peace" blog.

Do a "news" search for "VFW" and you'll see whether this is gaining media traction.

Frankly, the earlier VFW-PAC endorsement of Alan Grayson in Florida would have put me over the edge. That managed, I guess, to stay under the radar. But Boxer? Yikes.

Update: today on Hot Air.

Grayson too? Shocked Sheesh, WTH is happening to the organizations that we have counted on to defend this country? That's rhetorical, but if anyone has an answer, lay it on me!

The Washington Post has just picked up on an AP story noting the controversy. It's the first I've seen of this in the MSM...

Quote:
VFW calls on its own PAC to stop endorsements
By KEVIN FREKING
The Associated Press
Wednesday, October 13, 2010; 12:32 PM

WASHINGTON -- Endorsements from the Veterans of Foreign Wars Political Action Committee have so enraged many VFW members that its elected leaders have asked the PAC to immediately rescind all endorsements for next month's election.

The PAC operates separately from the veterans group and bases its endorsements on how lawmakers voted on issues of importance to veterans and members of the military.

But VFW members have been calling the national headquarters to complain, particularly about two races - both featuring Democratic incumbents.

In one race, Sen. Barbara Boxer of California got the PAC's endorsement over Republican Carly Fiorina. In the other, Rep. Ron Klein of Florida got the endorsement over Republican and Iraq war veteran Allen West.

Doubling down on stupid, the VFW PAC came out today to DEFEND its idiotic endorsement process. They just became a political weathervane. Whichever way they point, vote for the other candidate.

VFW-PAC Stands By Endorsement Process

So if Benedict Arnold had a good score on his VFW voting scorecard, the VFW PAC would endorse him? What a joke. CYA BS from a group of gutless flaks who have been outed as buffoons. Tunnel Vision Fools who allow some convoluted voting record to be the sole determining criteria for whether or not the incumbent receives an endorsement. This is the same mindless thinking that produces "Zero Tolerance" policies that get kids expelled from school for drawing guns in art class or wearing a shirt with a picture of a soldier carrying a gun...even if it's the kid's FATHER. Maybe they should add a category for TREASON and subtract points for each act committed by the incumbent.

Boxer and some of the others have wasted no time highlighting the endorsement. Sickening. Our own candidates taking "friendly fire" from the VFW PAC, and the SCOUNDRELS riding the wave to victory on our own tanks.

I would suggest to the VFW-PAC that if all they use to evaluate politicians is a voting scorecard that ONLY looks at votes on issues EVERY incumbent would vote for unless he wants to be labeled "anti-veteran", the best course of action for endorsements is "DON'T ASK, DON'T TELL".

This just out from Scott Swett: (online version linked through title below includes links to documents referenced)

Quote:

Aid and Comfort -- How leading Democrats enabled the Iraqi insurgency in Fallujah
Scott Swett October 15, 2010

New information is emerging about efforts by major Democratic Party figures to undercut American war efforts in Iraq by providing aid to the insurgents. Lt. Col. Buzz Patterson's article Treason in America details how a coalition of radical organizations, including US-based Code Pink, delivered some $600,000 in cash and supplies to insurgents and their families in Fallujah, just days after 51 American troops were killed there in some of the bloodiest action of the Iraq war. An approving article published in Islam Online tipped off the connection between the anti-American Global Exchange coalition and the Democrats who made their venture possible:

“They secured diplomatic courtesy letters from US Senators Barbara Boxer of California and Raul

Grijalva of Arizona and Congressmen Dennis Kucinich of Ohio and Henry Waxman of California.”

Islam Online deleted the incriminating page, which had been online since early 2005, on October 12, less than an hour after the publication of my American thinker article describing the close relationship between Senator Barbara Boxer and Code Pink. A cached version is still available.

Buzz Patterson's new article provides the actual letter written by Congressman Henry Waxman to the US Embassy in Aman, Jordan on behalf of the pro-insurgent group. The letter has a Congressional letterhead and is dated December 14, 2004 - while American troops were still fighting in Fallujah. It asks the Consul General to provide "any assistance you could offer" to the Global Exchange coalition during its mission to deliver supplies to the insurgency.

The corresponding diplomatic letters written by Senator Boxer and Congressmen Kucinich and Grijalva have not yet been made public. No doubt they, too, would make interesting reading.
