I'm not so sure of that greasepaint.
Giap was an excellent military commander, but he was just following the written instructions of General Trần Hưng Đạo who repelled several major Mongol invasions in the 13th century under Kublai Khan. Trần Hưng Đạo wrote a treatise on warfare which Viet Nam keeps as a state secret and only brings out when they get attacked by a foreign army. Giap used Trần Hưng Đạo's set of military strategies to defeat the French and later against the South. The Chinese have unsuccessfully tried to invade Viet Nam countless times and have never succeeded because of Trần Hưng Đạo's writings.
You point out some of our less capable commanders, but we also had Washington, Patton, Eisenhower and Lee who were all stellar.
Our current commanders in the field have had their hands tied by the politicians. They can't excel because they aren't allowed to. _________________ Swift Boats - Qui Nhon (12/69-4/70), Cat Lo (4/70-5/70), Vung Tau (5/70-12/71) |

And that's been a problem for a very long time.
Our current commanders in the field were placed there by the same policies and policy wonks that constrict them once they're there.
The capable ones get tired of bucking against ineptitude and stupidity and wash out of the system, so the top-heavy management has more than the expected percentage of those who have collided with the Peter Principle.
The whole system breeds incompetence and mediocrity. It's always been political and difficult - think back to the stupid stuff you had to do as a young sailor.
But, honest to God, if you could take a look at some of the stuff that our troops have to live with these days, you'd want to punch a wall.
Jaw-dropping, unbelievable, unimaginable idiocy. _________________ ~ Echo Juliet ~

An article on OSS training of Ho and Giap
Ho, Giap and Me
Our Generals can only act as civilian politicians allow.
For far too long, the politicians, who have no understanding of the Military, use them for scoring political points over protecting the nation or the Troops.
While civilian control over the Military is a must, it helps to have understanding of the importance of the military by those in control. _________________ Clark County Conservative |
