Gary Larson (whose commentary we've noted here before) remarks on the veil of secrecy that has seemingly been imposed by the U.S. Navy in regards to both the issuance and revocation of Sanders' Silver Star...and which appears to suit most of the major media just fine, thank you very much...

Secrecy Surrounds Silver Star Medal Revocation
By Gary Larson

<snip>

Except for a few intrepid news and opinion outlets, plus Navy Times, a respected military newspaper, a cone of liberal silence descended around shocking news that a Silver Star medal for gallantry was yanked from a high-ranking Navy officer back in August 2010. No why is given; it is shrouded in the mist of military bureaucracy.

<snip>

The key question, still not answered, is why the Navy took this award back. Was it because, in addition to the subject being retired Navy brass, he also served as deputy assistant Navy undersecretary in the Clinton administration?

And why the silence since last August? It goes unexplained. Perhaps some dogged news hound could file a Freedom of Information petition to find out?

<snip>

We await news now from inquiring new media, not giving much hope to the mainstream, for further details on this enigmatic case. We are not holding our breath on this, I swear, but a few answers on this case would be truly enlightening.

Well, gee, why not have one of the true expert, cr(H)ack journalists like, oh, maybe Dan Rather or Marvin Kalb dig right into this and publish their findings for the world? Kalb could release a revision to his non-selling "Haunting Legacy" tome with all the juicy details...National Enquirer, you're on deck.

I'm positive Rather could easily find another "fake but accurate" memo addressing the why.

I hear Kinko's is still in business.

The Military.com newsletter features this story, today:

http://www.military.com/news/article/navy-strips-silver-star-from-former-navy-official.html?ESRC=navy.nl

Quote:
Sanders received the Silver Star in 1992 for his courage in battling the Viet Cong in 1969 as a swift boat captain. However, Mabus cited in his memo new facts and evidence surrounding the incident for which the award was made, as well as the way the award was processed, as reasons it was taken away.

Navy spokeswoman Lt. Alana Garas said Thursday that the decision was made after information came to light in late 2009 and early 2010.

"If those facts would have been known to the Navy secretary in 1992, they would have prevented the award of the Silver Star," she said.

Thanks NNN. From that 29 July AP story (emphasis mine)...

Quote:
It wasn't clear whether the decorated Vietnam veteran's criminal record played any role in the decision, which was first reported earlier this week by the Marine Corps Times.

That's simply untrue.

The "story" was (as we now know) in the "print edition" of the "Navy Times" (I don't know about the "Marine Corps Times" but one might reasonably assume it was published in their "print" edition as well) on or about 12 July but wasn't made available online (note "Posted" not "Published") until 27 Jul and after first being publicized here (on 12 Jul), Wintersoldier.com (on 25 Jul)...then by Thomas Lifson at "American Thinker" on 26 Jul which was then picked up by a slew of additional online media to include "Drudge"...which was likely the impetus behind the "Marine Corps Times" and the "Navy Times" electing to make the story available online.

Whether this apparent editorial election to suppress online distribution of this story was made at the "Navy Times" website level or higher up in the Gannet organization (who is the owner, not Military.com as I've recently learned) hasn't been yet addressed, nor do I expect it ever will be.

That AP reporter Julie Watson describes this story as being "first reported earlier this week by the Marine Corps Times" is testimony to the dominance of online media in this new age of communication whose nativity we personally witnessed in the evolution of the SVPT campaign in 2004.

If it's not "online", for all intents and purposes, it no longer exists.

Well, we know that they don't always have to lie outright in order to spoonfeed us their POV - and they usually don't lie outright.

This way, if anyone bothers to even call them on it, they can explain it away with poor syntax - they can say that they didn't intend to say that the story broke in the media in MCT earlier this week, but that MCT first published it earlier this week, as if MCT will further follow this story.

Parsing words, and splitting hairs, some of our media is so talented! Evil or Very Mad

Relative to this subject, "icyman61's Blog" at CoastalCourier.com and the comments it generated should be of interest to all...

Quote:
Retired Captain Wade Sanders had his Silver Star the third highest medal for Gallantry revoked. Is it due to his conviction of possessing horrible child pornography. He is currently serving a 37 months sentence in prison for that felony crime. This crime which was committed in 2008 has gone unreported by the media outlets, why?

From that blog comes the $64,000 question - the one that is anwered before it's even asked:
Quote:
If Capt. Sanders is not entitled to his medals, what about John F. Kerry?

Finally, someone outside our little community dares to voice the fear that must be rattling around in John F. Kerry's vapid little brain.
